Default This distributor setup looks very cool

I'm a points and condenser fan myself, but this is intriguing.

You can buy a flattop Mallory and lots of sets of points and even a few trash can condensers for $529 and look even more cool.

Yea, I wouldn't buy one, but being able to set the advance curve how ever want is pretty cool, and it doesn't have the big ugly HEI cap.

I knew years ago that this would soon make on the sene, I'm supprised it took so long. the factories have been doing this for years, as well as Megasquirt. Yes I would be concerned with reliability.

I agree with you Lawrie. Although I'm very happy with running a stock helmet distributor on my cars, that have been built with quality components, and timed correctly, it would be interesting to try a conversion like this to evaluate/compare performance. It might also be advantageous to carry something like this as a temporary quick fix replacement, if, or when stranded on the side of the road, while on long distance driving tours.

Wow! It's expensive but, it's the wave of the future. A friend of mine in FL just had his fuel injected engine remotely tuned via his I-phone by a guy in TX.

I bet the Chinese could make this a very well engineered product if customers would pay the price, excluding COVID 19.

If I was going to go pointless, I would use Pertronix!

The ability to be able to control the AF ratio and ignition timing under ALL operating conditions, is called "Engine management". All cars sold today have some form of this Technology. It's nice to see this being adapted to our beloved Flathead. By doing so, the engine should last much longer, have ore power and excellent fuel economy. I've been trying to do this for the mast few years and with the help fron Richard from FL came pretty close. The best part of it was all the information was posted here on the barn, and ignored by many. I hope someone on here will spend the time and money to test this product as well as richard did.

For me these new pointless distributors ARE pointless. OK for new vehicles, but I don't want to pollute my old Fords.

I would be interested in seeing that system in a crab distributor.

We haven't run it yet but we put a 6 volt Pertronix in a 35 crab. We started with a 6 volt Rolls Royce unit and had to make a jig to machine the inside of the unit to fit on the crab. Also will be running a 6 volt alternator in original case to control the fluctuation in voltage. It worked well running on a Sum machine but no real road test yet. Dave/Green Bay

mechanical advance using a 11A internals and vacuum for the brake. Pretty much like original with the exception of the Pertronix. I think I have some pictures at home if interested.

In my opinion, while it will sure impress folks at a car show. Look I can tune my car from my phone , just watch them all gather around.
Meanwhile you are dead in the back water of podunk Iowa , not a car guy for miles around.
Well not for me anyway, just too plain ugly.

Tuning a flathead in an old style Hot Rod with a "SmartPhone" just seems wrong to me on many levels.

It's definitely the way things are headed. Not necessary or desired on MY Flathead. Others may choose to put it on THEIR Flathead and I'm ok with that. To each their own.

I have let this one soak i for a day or two before replying..

Something i have learned over the years (60 plus years with cars) is that the factory is going to do everything they can to make the product ( in this case a gasoline engine) the very best they can .
The top of the line line flatheads from the factory ran 11 degrees ( 22 degrees engine ) of spark advance at 2500 rpm . Some early models ran 8 degrees ( 16 engine) .
Now if we take that as the desired rate then why change it ?? The video shown here shows the effects of taking advance out of the engine , losing torque and hp.
SO no matter what ya do to the engine this base line doesnt really change !
We spent a fortune on our Bonneville engine to make 181 hp at 4300 rpm while my friend down the street is making over 1000 hp with twin turbo monster mustang !!!
Just clean it up, make it the best it can be and go on !

I am getting ready to take a look at some of these jap ignitions based on the look as well for a customer will report when done .......

You forgot that they made the best product they could at the lowest price.
Henry II was pissed when he found out GM was making 49 Chevies for .25 cheaper than Fords' 49 Fords

For what it's worth i have a prototype 6 volt positive earth i made for a model A sitting on the bench next to me. Automatic advance so once it starts you just pull the lever to full advance & leave it there.
Best thing is, it also uses the original points so you swap 2 wires and it's back to original points system.

Wouldn't be too hard to adapt it to a flathead, but you'd have to jamb something in the weights to leave it at full advance, or tie them together with wire.
