is it possible to replace the cork float without removing the whole gauge....ie, bending wire arm enough to get float off and putting new cork on then "unbending" the wire arm?

Anything is possible, but in this case, it's not really practical.

Good chance of breaking the wire by working it back and forth like that.

Also you would end up breaking the old cork to get it off with the pieces now in the tank and there is a washer and upset on the end of the rod, it does not just slide on. There wouldn't be a way to lock the new one in place.

It's not a huge deal to pull the entire gas gauge assembly - you can do it without removing the instrument panel, but it's easier if you do. I'd suggest that you get a "gas gauge rebuild kit" and a set of the special wrenches from the vendors. Be sure to get the fuel level in your tank well down before you do. Most of the Model A maintenance or restoration books have the procedure, but if you're at all mechanically inclined it's pretty intuitive.

Most gauges that have been in for a while have hardened gaskets anyhow and leak vapor a bit so it's good to refresh the gaskets.

Packrat, most Model A clubs have a loaner gas gauge tool if you want to go that route. Where are you located?

DISCONNECT the BATTERY first. Use CORK gaskets.

Use the flat steel laser cut nut removal tool . The pot metal version normally slips off, no doubt made offshore by someone who has no idea of its purpose .
