Default Manners... A new rule...

I don't know where to start... So, lets start here. Read that thread in its entirety and note the seemingly endless list of people that feel as though they are being sniped or harassed by other users.

Ironically, some of the people complaining on that thread are the same people that are causing issues. Generally speaking, it's a huge mess... and I'm to blame. I just haven't done a good enough job getting rid of users that are destructive to the community. Today, I'm hoping to get back on the right track.

So, I'm introducing a new rule or protocol for dealing with users that just can't manage to post politely. It's a typical three strike rule. Essentially, a user that posts without manners will be banned for one week. A second offense and they will be banned for a month. A third offense and they will be banned permanently. Automatic bans will also be used for users that are obviously trying to cause problems for either the forum or a specific user.

We will give no special consideration for users with large post counts or specialized Ford Knowledge or anything else. It's a black and white deal.

Be nice or don't post.

***

I need help however... If someone posts something derogatory towards you, don't respond (if you further instigate the problem, you could be banned as well) - instead, use the report button. Help us weed out the people that are being so disruptive. We really need the help fellas...

Oh... and fellas... opinions are fine. However, if you can't post your opinion without bagging on someone else's you need to keep your opinion to yourself. Drama simply isn't welcomed here guys.... under ANY circumstance.

***

This is a fluid deal too. I'm working to clean the joint up and my strategies might fluctuate, but the general message will not.

Thanks fellas... and sorry for all the trouble,

Ryan

I just checked... you literally have never had a post reported. I think you are going to be ok.

Most of the guilty have a long and sordid history of starting trouble. They will all be gone soon... I already got two this morning!

Thanks, Boss.

As an elementary educator, sometimes you need to lay down the law so everyone can have fun and enjoy. I'll try my best to mind my P's & Q's.

Ooops! Sorry; I'm not fully versed on some of the more sophisticated ins and outs of the internet. I'll just say that I was unaware that that sort of thing was going on so I didn't read the thread and will continue on in my blissful ignorance.

Just wondering if " not politically correct " and " blunt " equates to " not polite " ? If so I may need to pack da bagz .

We don't allow politics on the ford barn and never have...

And if you are looking for the forum to teach you manners, then yeah - back your bags.

If, however, you are here for the right reasons and are capable of treating people like you would want to be treated then you are welcomed on the forum.

It's not that hard to be polite. It just isn't.

It has only happened to me once but I sure remember it! I offered correct information on one posters incorrect definition of third degree burns. I ended up with a criticism of not only my medical degree but also the country I live in.

I really love my early Ford and visiting this site - keeping my visits enjoyable is appreciated - Karl

Letting people/abusers know they are on others 'ignore' lists might help as well....

Boy, I hope I'm not on that list?? I know I sometime get frustrated with some of the questions, but I try to help those that are not familiar with some part of the engine or suspension. My biggest concern is safty. These old cars are not safe in today traffic. As long as you know this, fine. But traveling 70 mph down the interstate with the original brakes can be dangerous. AS old as I am, I've seen too many nice cars damaged by this. I my self lost a nice 36 Ford because I was going too fast with the stock brakes. I learned a lesson there. Just remember an "Accident" is an unplanned event.

You are just fine Ron.

I think most of us know who the culprits are. It's generally the same names involved year after year with this stuff.

Referring to Tim Ayer's comment in post #6, and Ryan's reaction, it appears that a number of folks here are on about the same level as grade school kids! 'Meet me out by the bike rack after school' that sort of thing.

Thank you sir for what you are doing.

There are always a few in every crowd - and in most companies. I'm always amazed at our ability to put up with them and usually for far too long. We spend more time trying to justify why they're here, than they do on thinking about what they say and how they say it.

No matter how smart you are, experienced or fortunate (to own a bunch of cool shit), if your a negative and vindictive person - you do more harm in the end than good. Be positive, be cool - or shut the heck up.

I say, flush em . . . and THANKS for doing so!

There is some room for misunderstanding. Ryan PM'd me in reprimand for referring to a celebrity poster, from Waco Texas as Waco guy, not wacko. Correct spelling and grammar not considered. The reference I thought was a great tongue in cheek responding to being called every kind of SOB. A bit of a disappointment. Fred A

I don't remember that at all... So I guess it was recent.

In any case, you know what makes online arguments such a big problem in general? People feel the need to "retaliate" to trolls that call them names. Ultimately, this is what the original poster wants... as it ends up in causing drama. To avoid this, if someone attacks you - don't respond. Instead, just press the "report" button. Problem solved.

Ryan,

I'm glad you've clarified the expanded use of the "Report" button. Up to now, I thought it was just to alert the moderators about threads on "Eastern-European Diet Aids" and such that sometimes pop up in the middle of the night. I don't remember seeing this when I first joined, but I'm glad to see it now.

I agree, it does not take any more effort to be polite, in a disagreement. It gets frustrating though to hear of the subject problem incidents, and not knowing what actually happened because the offending posts have been deleted. Perhaps adding to the banned procedure you explained, the punishment of being on an available banned list, would be even more incentive to keep it civil.

Once upon a time, when Truman was in the White House (and Ford was still building flatheads!), if you said something you had naught, the next guy took you up on it, right there. And it ended there.

Today, thanks to the anonymity and physical distance of the internet, we have to deal with wienies who wouldn't DARE make certain statements in front of the people they are denigrating.

Ryan - Thank you for being on top of it.

It took some time, but we were able to get rid of the folks that weren't mature enough to express an opinion without bagging on someone else's. It was really that simple... and it was only a few users.

Over on the HAMB I have a circle of friends that at times we bust each others balls. It is all done in a fun guy kind of thing and we all know that it is just are way of being dumb guys! (as my wife would say) I hope it doesn't get misconstrued. We will be more careful!

It's nice to see that the ol 'Barn isn't a stepchild of Atomic Industies. I can only imagine the deep-rooted stress of managing what's essentially intellectual product/service.

That said there's an intangible (maybe) aspect of all this schtick. Anonymity. If you've never met the one you're talking to on a forum board you miss every real nuance of their personality. Their "schtick" if you will. FWIW by schtick I mean their platform of sorts, what they do, how they talk, sort of like a comic's general topics which is what a schtick really is.

Comedy aside, all of this is deeply personal to everyone here. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY on this forum truly needs anything it covers. It's a personal choice founded in nostalgia, upbringing, personal interests, or just how that one person chose to have FUN. FUN. Yes I said it twice and in caps cuz some of us older bucks are hard of hearing

Fun comes in many ways. "Dude, you're such a dick." if said with a grin and in a tone reflective of mutual fun it's more a compliment than anything else, said differently by someone unrelated, easy to be taken as, well, the slam it might be. In my many years sharing the boards of Atomic Industry (our fearless leader Ryan) I've always felt like they're just a milk crate and cup of coffee short of hanging around the shop. On that crate we might talk of everything from compression ratios to old girl friends and everything in between.

And in all reality it's that easy to enjoy the time we all spend here. No secret, I spend more time on the HAMB than here but I feel just shy of duty bound to drop in now and then. I've been helped and tried to help here as well as simply and quietly enjoy pictures and adventures of others. Nothing to prove, or indeed approve or disapprove of. I like this stuff, and no matter the venue us car folks are the finest human beings to walk the earth. You could be in FL, MI, UT, CA, PA, odds are if you were out on a limb and needed something a car guy or gal would jump to the rescue. That sentiment alone is worth a seasoning of respect and good ol human affection. And it's ok to be a bit of dick now and then, but not against your fellow 'barners, with them. Sorry to pontificate so much, and I'm glad some dialogue has been created about this.

Oh yeah, don't forget to have FUN...

Hello All,

I read the post and can relate to many takes on this. I love older cars and have had many. I never had someone to show me mechanics so I had to learn on my own or through what I consider you guys "the experts". This is my first pre-1960 car but I have always wanted the challenge(and I guess to preserve a piece of history). I know they are very different from the era I am used to and will humbly apologize now for any questions that may seem stupid but when I look at a flathead Vs a 351, or 302 I am amazed. I have a background working in the emergency services so I can relate to safety concerns also. I am sure some may have looked at my recent posts requests and thought who is this wingnut but I can assure you there is a sincere desire to learn from you all. Thanks again for any future help I may request on my 47. Cause it needs it!🤣👍

Punctuation is important. These two sentences are very different...

I helped, jack, off a horse. Or.... I helped jack off a horse.

Get your point across with some dignity.

In both cases a load was taken off the horse.

Do you think it might be a good idea to post who gets banned? I have run into occasions whereby I wanted the opinion of an individual only to find out later that they were no longer a member. Seems rather secretive if no one is aware of it.
