Coolant system cleaning

I have looked down the water jacket see a lot of rusts scale . Any thing or what if anything can be done while the motor is still in the vechile . The motor has sat for awhile then someone started hoses and water pumps . So would like some ideas on cleaners or acid and method to clean the system before trying to start Thanks Tom 1937 ford pickup flathead 85

I would be careful what you put in it if it is not running. Any acid needs to be neutralized and that can be difficult without being able to circulate it well.

Many Model A folks fill the system with EvapoRust or the equivelent. Let it sit or some run with it. Then flush it good and reverse flush it. After that they will add a "gano" filter to catch "things" before they get to the radiator. Try a search on the A site. Some also use vinegar and run with it for a week or so, then drain, flush good and neutralize.

Good post! But keep in mind that EvapoRust is a non-acid where as vinegar is an acid.

I gave my '51 Merc engine the "Evaporust Treatment" when it was on the test stand (actually, I used "Rust-911" for cost reasons; it works the same way). I filled it with the properly mixed solution and ran it for about half an hour and then let it sit for a day. When I drained it, the solution came out black; that means it was working. I did that three times. On the last cycle, the solution that drained out was not nearly as black as what came out the first two times, so I decided I had gotten to the point of diminishing returns, so I called it good. I've had the engine in my car for the last two years and have no overheating problems yet.

My neighbor 28 model A put vinegar in for a week did it twice,no luck ..he next tried evaporust for few days no luck ,had to buy new larger extra row radiator works now ..sc

most of the rust and sand will be in the rear water jackets. on one block i had out turned upside down on stand i got a large coffee can of the crap out another time i modified shopvac hose to fit tube that fit down in water jackets. this got most of the loose stuff. Mark

Second the comments about manualy cleaning the casting sand, etc, out of the back of the block when possible. It is amazing the amount of debris that can come out of there!

Has anyone tried Ridlyme? A friend of mine used it on his '32 V8 engine and it worked great. Runs about 30 degrees cooler and holds about a gallon more water!
