I have been rummaging thru the net and from what I have found, the R stands for retarded time. There was a A an d R cam. Hopefully ,someone will chime in here with some actual info.

This is unverified but one source gives duration of 280 and lift of 350.

The info that I have comes from an old Roger Huntington publication (How to hop up Ford and Mercury V-8 engines).

Intake opens 22 BTDC Closes 66 ABDC, by my calculation that is 268 duration. Overlap 40 degrees.
Exhaust opens 62 BBDC Closes 18 ATDC, by my calculation 260 duration.
Overlap 40 degrees.
Intake lift: .315
Exhaust lift: .305

If you would like to know more contact Elgin Cams, 707-545-6223 and ask for Dema. He professes to have been a protege of Ed Winfield and should have more data.

There seem to be a lot of variations of this cam. Most of the specs I've seen show more lift than that. Usually around .350 - .360. There was an SU1A which was 4 deg advanced and an SU1R which was 4 deg retarded. Don't know what the N stands for.

Agreed. The "real" Winfields were hotter than most of the copies floating around. As Flatjack 9 mentioned, there are also a number of variations of the same grind from Winfield himself.

Either Dema or cam grinder Pete will be able to give you the straight scoop on these cams.

Thanks to all. The cam I have is not a regrind and appears to work with a std adjustable lifter. The regrinds must use the adj. tappets with a thick head.

I've got two regrinds that are marked 1R. They measure .350-.355 on all of the several lobes I've measured. This is probably no help, as they were reground locally, by someone that posted on his forum. ie... origin unknown / questionable.
