Default Horn Rod Issue

Another loose end before I can get this restoration on the road !!

Ref 35 Horn Rod…

I have all new wiring and last fall the lights and horns worked… however, when I would turn the steering wheel, the light disk would also rotate with the steering wheel turning the lights on and off.. Suggestion was to add a horn rod sleeve/shim which is available from Mac’s.

Just put it in and solved the problem of the light disk dragging on the steering wheel….however now the horns don’t work..

By removing the light switch bulb at the end of the steering I get continuity from the tip of the horn rod to chassis ground when the horn button depressed… so is seems this shim has raised the horn rod enough so it does not make contact with the center of the light switch bulb.

Can anyone offer a suggestion or two other than removing the shim ?

Thanks Jim

shorten the shim, and make sure the rod is perfectly straight

Make sure the spring loaded contact in the center of the light switch is moving freely and has not hung up. If it is OK then you can add a couple of brass washers to the bottom of the horn rod contact and solder them in place. This will in effect make the horn rod slightly longer.

Thanks Terry/OH....

The contact in the bulb was moving freely and it was easy enough to pull the horn rod being a Phaeton.........built up a nice ball of solder on the contact and another problem solved.

Thanks, Jim
