Default Speedometer Gear Housing Leak

Hi,

I am puzzled by this one. On my 1930 coupe with oval speedometer I have replaced the missing cable. Last year I installed a gear housing without cable just to seal the drive shaft. I mistakenly bought a housing for a round speedometer. So I have replaced the gear shaft and retainer. Now when driving my grease comes out the bearing end of the gear shaft in the housing opposite the cable attachment. Comes out like soft serve. The bearing diameter of the new shaft (bottom in pic) is actually larger than the old one. No leaks last year. Am I missing some sort of plug in that side of the housing? Seems like I am missing something incredibly basic here.

Thanks,
Jerry

Do you have this plug in your housing? Can't tell from your picture...

No plug. I may have missed it when I disassembled but I didn't see one. The end of the gear shaft is open.

You might go to a auto parts store and ask for a freeze plug. They just might have one that small.

Thanks! I made a press in plug out of aluminum and JB Weld over the top for good measure.
