21 stud bad sleeve installation
I have a 21 stud engine that was in my 36 pickup when I got it. It was rebuilt with very low hours on it. I started it up and it ran very roughly. When I tried to start it again, it was stuck. I took it apart I found after it was rebuilt at some time, left out side uncovered long enough that 4 and 8 filled with water, and were pitted bad enough to need to be sleeved.
I new of machine shop in Gresham OR. that had rebuilt many flatheads. I took the block to them, 2 new sleeves, .060 bore, polished crank, $770.00 I put the engine together with very expensive bearings, only found on the Barn. I installed it in the frame and started it. Within a few minutes the pan was full of water. I called the machine shop, they said clean out the bottom end, add new oil and try again, and add some more KB block seal again. More water! I took the engine out and apart and took it back to the machine shop, they could find nothing wrong. I took the block to a place that could pressure test it. The only leaks were the top and bottom of the newly installed sleeve. Another $150.00 The machine shop was very sorry as well as my self. The water did not do my bearings any good ether, so the 37 21 stud block was set aside, and my 59 AB was installed. My question is there any way to seal the sleeves in the block without installing new ones. Needless to say I am very gun shy about putting and more money in it, but hate to see it go to scrap. Sorry this was so long, but it is only part of the story. Thanks again, Ron |

Re: 21 stud bad sleeve installation
HERE ARE SOME THOUGHTS. Be sure to watch the first video using Loctite 640 after the sleeve has been installed. Might work for you. Pull the sleeve up 1/2 in., apply locktite 640 and then pull the sleeve back down, carefully. Your machine shop should be able to do this.
