Default Head value

Friend of mine called said he has one bare block and three model a heads that he wants a value for to put in an estate sale. They are in a building and not really clean. Told him that the heads maybe $15.00 each and didn’t offer him a value of the block. Told him the heads might be cracked who knows if they are or not without being cleaned and magnafluxed. The heads are stock heads with no C on them. Did I tell him to high. I have a feeling the block and heads only worth 30-40 dollars. I know it’s a broad question but that’s all he gave me to go on. What do you all think.

If you put a tape across the bore and it looks standard (3 7/8, 3.875) and has no visible cracks it might be worth $200 but more likely he will unfortunately have to scrap it. He might call a local Model A club and see if he can get any interest. If those are the only Model A parts he probably won't draw much of a Model A crowd.

I stopped by James Rogers' "Dreamwerks" shop last week, he literally has a pile of stock heads sitting on the shop floor from customers who've upgraded to HC heads. Value on those is probably low because so many people have an old head in good condition sitting around.

He might want to call up any restoration shops in his area to see whether they would buy the block to have as a spare.

I saw a "C" head up at Hershey, cow pasture fresh and they guy was asking $100 for it. Told him it was a good deal if he got rid of the rust pits on the machined surfaces and had the water pump to go with it..

Kind of like the guy with the mildly corroded Winfield head that wanted $850. Ask a premium and the part should reflect it.

$35. is fair for a good head. A rebuildable bare block $100.

Two weeks ago I bought a standard head at Epping, NH Antique auto flea market for $20. It looks good and sounds uncracked.

About two months ago I responded to an ad on Craigslist for "Model A Motor and late Model V8 block for sale $50."

On my arrival I found the blocks in a storage container, a friendly octogenarian woman, and willingness to dicker.

We settled on $40 for the block ONLY if I take the V8 too. Which I did.

The V8 was never inspected and got dropped off at the local scrapyard without my even stopping at home.

Meanwhile, after disassembly, the Model A block has issues with the rear main, looks good for refitting at .010 (ring ridges are VERY small) and was probably set aside because of the rear main leak - which it MUST have had.

A lot of the problem is probably that no one knows where you are located. Add your general location to your profile and I, or someone else, might be interested.

Took 3 blocks to Bert’s...all no good. According to most engine builders, you can get one out of ten A blocks that can be rebuilt.

That is why I noted "rebuildable" in my above post.

My location is North Louisiana, if it helps determine the value.
