I believe it was just a castle nut, cotter pin, and the woodruff key.

Thought I read somewhere, but can not now find, that sometimes a washer under the nut had to be used, if either by tightening down the nut you can not get the cotter in, or if the nut can not be tightened enough to prevent wobble.


And something about getting the tapers to match?

Also, the aluminum replacement fan needs a flat washer. A lock washer will Gaul the aluminum.

On repop water pump shafts there are ALL sorts of manufacturing inconsistencies. One of these is the position of the taper relative to the threaded retainer on the shaft. Some repop shafts NEED a washer between the fan and the shaft to get proper pre-load on the taper.

For a while there were issues with the aluminum fans with a taper apparently being done as part of the casting process - this was found unsatisfactory and now all these fans have a fully machined taper.

But- getting the tapers to marry and mate can still be a challenge.

I think that may depend on individual situations. When I installed mine, The woodruff key, castle nut and cotter pin was only needed and the fan fit nice and snug.
