Default One piece Front seal 8BA

I am building a 8BA engine and would like to use a one piece seal but I can not find a smooth seal sleeve. I understand that you can not use the the one that has a spiral groove as it would leak and defeat the purpose of the conversion.
I have read that a lot of you experts like the rope seal but I would just like to try the one piece seal. Thanks for your comments in advance.

Others will know better. However I am running Red's Headers one piece seal with the spiral groove pulley on my 21 stud LB and on my 40 truck (81A) with great results. Discussions some years ago pointed out the spiral pulley was O K to use, including Red.
Works for me
My opinion

I rebuilt the 59ab engine in our 46 and used the one piece seal with the original spiral sleeve. No leakage in 2500 miles. However, I just rebuilt an 8ba and used the one piece seal and a smooth sleeve. Most the vendors carry the smooth seal. Check MacVP

I have a 1-pc seal and a spiral sleeve on my 8BA. No leaks.

To install it, I wrapped the crank in aluminum foil so it had a "ramp". I was having a hard time before that.

I don't know much about these (I've had real good luck with rope seals), but I have a question. Since the groove spirals into the engine, wouldn't it be of benefit moving any excess oil back into the pan, regardless of seal type?

Can someone tell me if the sleeve has a groove cut into it like the oil slinger does or does the sleeve just go up to the crank gear keway?

I have a one piece seal and smoot sleeve from Don Ferguson, maker of reproduction Ardun Heads, on my 8ba. Is of very high quality and does not leak. Is a bit more expensive than others.

Ardun, can you tell me if the sleeve has a groove cut into it to go on to the key or is it pushed up to the key?
Thanks, Joe

The smooth sleeve is unnecessary. The spiral turns in the direction to keep oil in the engine. However, ther's a thin steel washer that covers the cam drive gear. This prevents oil under pressure of the gears fron forcing oil through the seal. If left off, nothing can seal the crank. How do I know that??

Maybe I'm not explaining this the right way. The crank gear has a woodruff key that sticks out past the gear. The oil slinger has a notch on it to fit on to this key. What I'm asking is if the sleeve needs to have a notch in it like the oil slinger or does it just push up against the key?
Thanks, Joe

The slinger has the groove so that it barely catches on the crank gear key, keeps it from rotating. Then the sleeve, then the pulley key and pulley.

The ones I have seen do not have a notch for the key.

I don't see the need for all this. the stock system works just fine. The 8BA has a sleeve. the early pulleys have the sleeve built on the crank pulley. All you need is the seal. I don't understand why we try to make thing difficult. Now with that said, some seals don't fit very well in the pan and cover. I try to stay away from them, However you can use RTV to take up the space.

I would say you are going to need a notch. When you tighten up the pulley you will be jamming that into the key. Can you file a small notch into it? That would fix the problem.
