Default Dip stick

AllAt the recent car show at Orchard Beach, The Bronx NY, 3 model A 's were there and nobody was able to answer .....what is the proper depth that the oil dip stick is to go in. None of ours had a stop on it and I have been putting mine in all the way to the neck.
Please advise on the proper depth. With 5 quarts and the stick all the way in , I get a full reading on the stick.

I was taught that the dipstick goes all the way in, as far as it can go.

Dimensions from the full line to the handle bottom were given in the past and I measured mine to also give an answer, but don't recall the exact dimension right now. A "SEARCH" might turn up the thread with the answer.

All the way in. And don't forget to fit the "other" end (the short stub below the loop) into the block, as well, to ensure a true reading.

The reprint 1930 Owner's manual I have says to be sure both prongs of the dip stick are fully inserted, as far as it will go, so I would say just stick it in until it won't go any further.

All the way in is a good idea with most things in life including dip sticks. However, over the years you never what has happened. Are you sure you have a correct dipstick ? If not, then after an oil change [ 4 qts] just file a mark on the stick. If the pan is ever removed for cleaning and 5 qts installed then check the mark and correct it if needed.

I have found in the past, discrepancy's in the markings from a repo dip stick as compared with original dip sticks. Oil level half way between L & F is just fine.

Where is the discrepancy between 4 and 5 quarts. Why do some books say 5 and others 4 qts ?

There is 1 quart in the dipper tray so if you take the pan off and clean it then
the first fill would take 5 quarts and any oil change after that would take 4 quarts.
