29 special coupe top and wood
Has anyone done their own install on the wood and vinyl top? I have inherited a partial done 29, so I am putting a jig saw puzzle together with out any help.
I would love someone who had done this so as I run into the problem spots... I could have someone who’s gone thru it before... Photos, dimensions, and what kit was used... all kinds of questions |

Re: 29 special coupe top and wood
Well first of all I would like to Welcome you to the Ford Barn Forum!
I am sure others will tell you the same but first you should put your location under your user name. I'm assuming it is in Idaho but..... Second, try to join a local Model A Club as most are very helpful. Maybe you would be lucky enough to meet someone else that has one as they are a rare bird in that they were only built in 1929! As to the Special Coupe top and wood. I had one for a short period of time a long time ago, but what I think I remember is there is a piece of wood at the bottom of the roof under the rear window. I sure hope it is great shape or at least intact because they are not reproduced by any one that I know of. I'm sorry I don't have ANYpictures of mine which could help. Good luck with your project and Again Welcome! |

Re: 29 special coupe top and wood
I did repair/replace sections of wood surrounding the rear window and some of the belt-line sections in the area of the quarter windows. I had enough original to pattern replacement pieces and to give an idea of shaping and cut/sand for a secure fit. There are kits available from our vendors, these I have heard also require fitting and "tweaking" to make a good replacement. Good Luck..! kb

Re: 29 special coupe top and wood
I thought I could reproduce the original pieces from what was left on our 28 Special Coupe
The first set were undersized as the wood had shrunk over the years, the second set was better and made from every scrap of hardwood I could find. I remember we ended up buying the roof ribs just because it was easier. Looking back I would say it would be easier to fit and fiddle with a new wood kit than spending so much time copying what was there. I may still have some pictures around if you need some. Good luck! |

Re: 29 special coupe top and wood
Yesterday I thought I should mount the body to the frame so the wood would fit like it will at finish. I placed the wood blocks and got everything aligned. But, the rear body support, a riveted on riser attached to the rear bumper is too tall. It’s holding the car about an inch above the support blocks at the rear wheel...
Ever encounter this... any suggestions This would have been so much easier if I had taken the car apart, and not just blindly trying to rebuild. |

Re: 29 special coupe top and wood
Sound like you may have the Tudor bumper arms and not the coupe. I believe the coupe Body risers are the shortest at around 2 1/2"? not sure.

Re: 29 special coupe top and wood
My advice is remove the R. bumper arms and move forward. You can tackle that later and for now get the alignment at the hood to cowl and door fitment with the wood blocks and rubber shims.
There is/was a chart somewhere that will help you sort that out. I suspect that any 28- 29 coupe would be correct. There are parts books that will answer that. PS I live in Kuna. |
