Question Steering Box Mounting Question

Hey All,

I just finished completely rebuilding my steering box and column and am now ready to mount it back to my 31 Tudor. My problem is that I have somehow misplaced the two steering box mounting bolts. I really don't want to drive 180 miles round trip for just two bolt's from an A parts house.

I'd like to get a pair from NAPA down the street so my question is;

Does anyone know off of the top of their head the size of the steering box mounting bolt's and what grade of bolt should I get?

Regards
Bill

A-21122 is the bolt
A-21745 is the castle nut
A-23531 is the cotter pin

Different Parts Price Lists show different numbers.

3/8-24 is the thread. 1" appears to be the length.

Given that a NAPA bolt probably won't be drilled for the castle, you could substitute a nyloc nut (or deformation nut.)

Grade 5 is more than equivalent to the original. Grade 8 would be severe overkill.

You don't want longer than 1" or it interferes with the pitman arm. Nuts are on the outside.

I found 7/16"-24x7/8" and the nut it shows is 7/16"-20 so the parts books
are screwed up.

Then someone needs to get to Les Andrews and have him correct his book.

Place the sector housing against the frame and insert the two (2) frame bolts (3/8-24 x 1") [9/16 wrench] and castle nuts. Do not tighten the frame bolts until after the column bracket screws have been tightened.
He uses a 9/16 wrench for removal of the two bolts elsewhere.

Yup. Having a book is KINDA like having the bolts in your hand.

Joe,

I have all three of his books and read exactly that, but the hole diameter's in the sector housing are for a 7/16 and the frame is slightly elongated resulting in my question. I couldn't imagine Henry would have built in so much slop, but what do I know which is why I am asking.

Check for the missing bolts in your parts washer if you have one. I lost the long screws that hold the starter motor together, until I cleaned out my parts washer.

JW,

That would be fantastic and I sure would appreciate that. I also remember 5/8 for the bolt and 11/16 on the nut's.

Will,

I checked several times and I looked everywhere even in my collection of the old nut's and bolt's that I removed from the car that were replaced with newer ones. The only other piece I fount missing is one half of the steering column Anti Rattler rubber #A-3521 which is odd that only one half of it was missing.

But I can reassure you all that once the car is back together, they will be staring me right in the face, as usual.

Bill

The frame hole diameter is for when a different body style, worn out wooden blocks, no webbing, to be able to line up the steering column with the gas tank bracket or upper bracket so the column wont be "forced" into place, additionally loose fasteners will result in an elongated hole. comments?

Found some original nuts and bolts. The bolt is 7/16-20 x 1 5/32 and the nut
is a castle nut, both the nut and bolt take a 5/8" wrench. The Dec 1929
parts book shows these as A-21791 nut and A-21122 bolt. I looked in four parts
books and the Dec 1929 is the only one that seems to shows the right parts.

Mine are pretty round, and only slightly elongated forward and up, .050" on the bottom hole and .064" for the top hole. But the holes in the sector housing are .450" as well as my old sector housing's holes.

If they are to be 3/8", I would think .075" play in the sector housing bolt's to be pretty excessive.

Is it possible that the numbers changed along the way? I have the July 1, 1931 and the December 20, 1932 reprints which are showing different numbers for the application.

I even wondered given Les' normally quite accurate presentation, that he might have been referring to a 7 tooth sector and the two tooth sector might take larger bolts?

Mistakes/omissions do happen even in Les World.

The 1932 book shows the bolt 350618 5/16"-24x7/8" and the nut A-21791 7/16"-20.
The 1937 book shows the bolt 350618 7/16"-24x7/8" and the nut 34031 7/16"-20
The 1929 book shows the bolt A-21122 7/16"-20x1 5/32" and the nut A-21791 7/16"-20

If you look in the green bible parts book,it will show the bolt info near the back of the book, type of bolt thread and length etc.

Thank you all for the assistance. I have it mounted with 7/16 - 24 x 1." with Nylock nut's. This should get me through until I get the proper one's.

Again, Thank you all

AGREED!

There are several minor issues with his book's but I have noted and corrected everyone of them the moment I came home and started reading. There is a web site that point's them all out, I just can't remember it off the top of my head.

Without his book's, ... I sure would have had to do a TON of research which in most cases, ... isn't all that fun nor do I have that kind of time.

Yes, Les took on a daunting task given the production changes and just keeping everything straight.
