Shift lever bent?

Hello Barners,

I have disassembled the shift tower of my 32. The ball on the end of the shift lever has flat spots so I have to weld it up. What I don’t know how to interpret is the bend the shift lever has just above the ball. Is this something I can live with or am I in trouble?

It belongs there. Also, the ball on the end was not perfectly round when new. Those flat spots belong there, but perhaps not to the extent that you encountered.

Looks very normal to me. I wouldn’t weld on those spots on the bottom ball tip. As David said, the little bend is also normal for the 32-35 levers. Check the wear on the second/high nub on the lower end of the lever. It’s supposed to be 0.500” in diameter. You’ll often see some wear at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions on that nub. In this case you would want to tig weld some material here to build it back up. You have to do some grinding and filing to restore its contour.

In addition to the potential wear on the sides of the round nub part way up from the ball on the tip as Mac VP indicates, the slot in the shift lever for the round pin that inserts through the threads at the top of the opening in the shift lever housing is often worn (wider) near the top of the slot. That worn-in extra width makes for a sloppy shift lever unless eliminated by restoring the slot to its original width. The pin itself may be well worn and require replacement.
