Default oh crap! with a good ending

So I came home Friday night and pulled in the garage, shut off the motor, then turn ignition switch back on to check turn signals... walked around the car and turned off the turn signals, leaving ignition switch on for 4 days. Of course a very dead battery... bad enough. But I recalled (and looked up again) threads about the same thing that indicated the possibility of fried coils, points, condenser, etc. I was sick thinking I might have fried my new Haney coil.

I put my new 6v charger on the battery and crossed my fingers. 4 hours later, the battery seemed to be fully charged, I hit the starter, and first crank, started right up! Whew!!!

So my next stop was Beaches Cruise-in where our club was featured. Here's a couple pics:

You're lucky - it must have stopped with the points open.

Very lucky indeed. I fried the coil and drained the battery (Optima)enough to where it was stone dead and would not recharge. Big bucks to get coil rebuilt and a new Optima.

With luck like that, you should go buy a lotto ticket.

For a flat dead Optima battery, sometimes connecting the charger to a leadacid battery then use jumpers to connect the leadacid battery to the Optima. That will sometimes bring the Optima back.

Klicker if the points were open it wouldn't cook the coil. If they were open and nothing else was on the guages would be the only thing drawing on the battery and would take a while to run the battery down. In most cases as long as there is no battery charger hooked up the 3 amp load of the coil will run the battery down before doing damage to Skips coil. As the battery gets lower on voltage the heat from the resistance of the coil declines. G.M.

I had an Optima that was dead for a year or more and charged it up with a battery tender 2 years ago and it is still ok.
