Pictures of my dash Hydro dipped in woodgrain

I thought I'd share pictures of what a dash hydro dipped looks like for the folks that want woodgrain but are not sure how to paint it themselves. I was hoping for a more burgundy wood color but I think it came out great and I'm happy with it.

I think it looks great! As long as all the pieces are the same I wouldnt worry about what shade it is.

Thanks for the comments. The cost for the dash plus 4 lower window garnish mouldings cost $180 + $25 for ordering film that they don't normally stock. I painted the 2 upper quarter window mouldings and rear window frame burgundy color to add more color to the interior.

Sea slugs- After it is dipped it is clear coated with an Automotive grade clear coat paint. I believe the guy who dipped it said he uses PPG paints.
CW- I sent mine to a local company named Hog River Hydrographics. You should be able to find someone in your area that could also do this type of work. I think it's gaining popularity. I see videos on Facebook a lot of guys dipping all sorts of stuff.

Saw a pic of a pale Yellow Roadster Pickup, with all the trim done in Woodgrain, I KNOW it's not original, but it sure looked CLASSY & RICH.
I'm sure Henry would have approved it.

The dash rail looks awesome , very impressive.

I had all of my moldings, window frames, dash and windshield stantions done this way. I brought them painted and rusted parts, they blasted them with a soft media, dipped and cleaned the parts. Then they primed and filled any pits. Then they put 2 coats of paint, then dipped the transfer. Finally they put a couple coats of clear and baked the finish dry.

The company I used is SMI. 40 Water Street; Amesbury MA 01913. I worked with Brendan Bartley. [email protected] (978) 388-1601

I was especially satisfied with the job. They did 10 pieces for me, and it was around $450.00.

If this technology was around when Henry was making Model A's im sure he would approve of this process. Youtube has tons of videos showing it done from anything from army helmets to car rims.

Maybe you could have another tinted clear coat applied that would get to the color you originally wanted.

Brian- Yours looks great. Does it have a low sheen or is it matte finish? Looks like actual stained wood that way especially in that color.

I was thinking the same thing 700RPM. I'll be done here with the restoration pretty soon so I'll probably take a breather from tinkering with it for a while. Eventually after I cross some other honey-do's off the list I will pull them off and do just that.

I had them do a satin finish for me, just to add depth and more like wood. Many people do not believe me when I tell them it's metal parts.

Cool hand lurker - My original post may have been misleading to you and others as I have received a message regarding a quote for this type of work. I did not perform this work myself. I have no video demonstrations to share with you or links to post of the process. This was simply work I had farmed out and wanted to share the outcome. I mentioned the company I used in post #10. I've read in the past other threads regarding who sells woodgraining kits and gents that have trouble doing it themselves or who could people send thier parts to be woodgrained. I was simply offering a view of another option out there that can be utilized. I apologize for any confusion.

Not a problem, Barber. I have the sickness of always wanting to 'do it myself' so I misinterpreted your message. I didn't want to search another site because when I do, it leads to something else interesting and I get distracted by too much other good stuff! I never make it back to what I was looking at in the first place.

Probably. But you will have a dickens of a time removing all the woodgrain that you don't want from the rest of the body.

If I were 60 years younger I'd make a career of woodgraining. I did my own with cheap house paints and mahogany stain that I had left over from my furniture finishing days. Used a 39 cent brush for the graining part and sprayed several coats of lacquer over the finished product. Took a piece in the house and laid it on a mahogany table and had trouble finding it, (I lie a bit) but it sure did blend in. I have looked at original cars and their woodgraining is not real good. Whatever make the owner happy is fine with me. Yours looks great.

I liked the idea of the shelf paper from wall Mart easy to remove and I can change if out to a nice floral pattern.

The hard part is I would like to dip it I have a powder coat vendor who does nice dipping like gun stocks and that would be preferable but the dash is welded in. We bought a system that uses printers ink and roller that you pick the pattern of a plate bland roll it on. We are doing a burled walnut and the testing we have done looks really good I will post when it is done but it won't be till spring after the car is painted.
