Stuck Valve Guides
I'm removing the valves from a '30 engine. The guides for 6 valves were no problem pushing out with a little tap of a hammer and a blade screwdriver. But for two of the valves, they won't push through. I've tried using a punch and giving them some 'reasonable' hits with a hammer to get them to move but no luck. With the valve still in so it's tough to enough downward force. I was thinking I'll have to cut off the bottom of the valve (mushroom) to pull it up through the block. That will allow me to use more direct downward force to push them out.
Any ideas would be appreciated (or is cutting the valve a bad idea) |

Re: Stuck Valve Guides
The vendors have a tool to do that. Here's the description from Snyder's catalog:
Valve Guide Tool This hardened steel driver is a quality reproduction of a K.R. Wilson tool. It provides easy removal of the most stubborn guides. Complete with instructions. U.S.A. A-6500-VGT 1928-34 $15.95 / ea |

Re: Stuck Valve Guides
Had a similar problem with a guide(original 2 piece and mushroom valve). Ended up cutting the valve with a grinder and drilling out the guide progressively to 1/2 diameter and then driving out what was left. Can't figure how a guide can get this tight in a block. Didn't want to continue beating on a guide that with a enough force might crack the valve guide area of the block.

This is one of those posts illustrating why it is good to have a general geographical location noted in your information here...betcha there are 10 members with the right tool and knowledge near you who could help. If you're in northern NJ I'll pop over with my superduper invincible KD valve toolkit.

Yeah, old skates are the ones carved from mammoth tusks. Stuff on THIS forum has to be REALLY old for that adjective to be used. Standards, don't you know.

Re: Stuck Valve Guides
Soak those guides with PB Blaster. Use the proper tool. No problem!

Re: Stuck Valve Guides
I was doing this job just yesterday on my 10/1929 engine. I used the tool and it got stuck in the hole after it punched out the guide. Took awhile, but I got it unstuck. Sucks doing that in 110 degree heat here in AZ.

Re: Stuck Valve Guides
I prefer the other tool (not the one pictured) that is kind of a crooked shaft.

Re: Stuck Valve Guides
The guide remover that is bent to clear the valve head only work if the guide is not siezed to tight. When I install the guides I put a thin coat of Never Seize on the guides in case I ever have to take it apart years down the road.
