Fair price for rebuilt shocks?
I'd like to get a set of rebuilt shocks for my '28 Phaeton. Starting from scratch right now as the car doesn't have any shocks at all. It looks like once you have the shocks it takes about another $125 or so to get all the links, bolts, oil etc to complete the job. What would be considered a fair price to pay for a set of 4 shocks that were just rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing and stands behind their work?
Thanks for any help provided. |

Re: Fair price for rebuilt shocks?
At least $500. 3 hours labor plus parts to rebuild one. You do not offer rebuildable cores which requires about 30-40 shocks be taken apart to find 4 rebuildable ones. Maybe the $500 is a little low now that I think about it. For $1000 you can get four that work as original from Bill Stipe.

Re: Fair price for rebuilt shocks?
A lot of $$ depends on what you want ??.. Reproduction , or the Original 1928 Ford Script type with the correct #d arms & links for your car...

Re: Fair price for rebuilt shocks?
Look up John Holland in the midwest. Last I heard he was selling them for $75 each/no core. Dogbone links are much cheaper than original and work just as well.

$75 seems like a too-good-to-be-true price but if they really are available from a reliable source at that price I'd jump all over those. My car already has a fair amount of reproduction parts on it so functionality is more important to me than originality. I've already funded a complete engine rebuild & a set of round wheels this year so it would be nice to keep the cost reasonable on the shock. |

Re: Fair price for rebuilt shocks?
FYI:
The contact info for John Holland (found on a post from Feb of this year) is no good. John Holland 7208 Westlaw Road Valley City, OH 44280 330/483-3896 This number is disconnected. If anyone has an updated number to pass along, please do so. Thanks for your help, Guys - this is a great forum! |

Re: Fair price for rebuilt shocks?
Robert Paul advertises in the back of the MARC (Model A Restorers Club) magazine. I have a set from him and they have been working for years. I don't have his number on hand. Maybe someone can help out with that info.

Robert Paul
34175 Truckton Road Yoder, CO 80864 719-478-5102 No email. I also got a set from him earlier this year and I am very pleased with them. My wife even made the comment that this Model A was now handling like a modern car on the rough roads. He was charging $ 55.00 with your rebuildable cores and $75.00 w/o. Depending on what stock he has available. He does supply the correct shock for the month / year of your Model A though. Also they will come pre-adjusted and he doesn't want you to ever touch the settings. It seem like he is very busy so it may take some time for him to get the shocks done for you. |

Re: Fair price for rebuilt shocks?
I bought a pair of rebuilts at Hershey this year for $100 ea. He does a good job rebuilding them and there is no core charge. I think he was in the north chocolate field and name is Don, an older gentleman from Indianna. The only phone # I got was 765-478-4288. I put them on the front of the roadster and the ride is great. I have the Snyder tube type on the rear but the tubes for the front were too stiff so I replaced them with these.

Re: Fair price for rebuilt shocks?
John bought a wiper motor at my spaces at Hershey and gave me his card which has the same phone number. If you ever need his phone number in the future, he always has two ads every month in Hemmings Motor News.

Re: Fair price for rebuilt shocks?
I lost the eBay auction that Gordon had posted but he sent me a follow-up 2nd chance on another set that he was getting ready to list. Bought those & now just have to scrounge up the other parts needed for the installation. Seems pretty straight forward to install these. Really looking forward to the improvement in the ride. Also got a set of 5 wheels from the same seller. They arrived today & unfortunately the FedEx gorillas did a job on the one packed on top. Other than that they look great & will be a huge improvement over the ones I've been using. Thanks for the help on the shocks, guys - I do appreciate the forum's assistance.
