1951 F1 Steeriing Box Repair
I have a winter project coming up. I want to rebuild the steering box in my `51 F1. I was lucky when replacing the steering box on my cabriolet, it has an open top and no problem pulling the box from the topside. Does the `51 pickup remove the same way or can it be removed from the bottom without being on a hoist?

Re: 1951 F1 Steeriing Box Repair
Bud, I did our '51 ten years ago so I don't remember exactly how we removed the column but I didn't take the body off until after the steering column was out. As I recall, we took the steering wheel off and removed the shift shaft and the column shaft first and unbolted the steering box, etc. and pulled it out but... I had removed the front clip and that made the job much easier. Have fun.

Take the pitman arm off, remove the column shifter, wheel, remove floor plates near the pedals, and you can drop it out the bottom or pull it out thru the cab. Only comes out the top if you have stock exhaust, in fact with Red's headers, I don't think it can come out at all with the header in place. It greatly helps to disconnect the pedals so you can flop them down, if pulling out the top.

You can undo the front motor mounts and shove the motor over to the passenger side to gain enough room to take the steering box out the bottom .
