I went to the estate auction today for one of our club members who passed away last year. I was a bit disappointed in the quality of much of the parts, but it may have been picked over months ago by other Model A people. There were still several parts worth saving though. The auctioneer often grouped the Model A parts with a bunch of junk, so I let the junk buyer buy the pile, then he gave me a good deal on the few good parts I wanted.

Some of the repro signs went too high, but there were some really good buys to be had there today. Unfortunately the junk man will be scrapping some good parts. He bought a Model A and Model B engine, both on engine stands, and I hope he doesn't scrap them.

The 1930 Tudor brought $5000, and the Roadster sold for $7500. Both looked like solid good bodies, but will need several parts and hours of work to finish them. The Roadster came from California, went to Hershey, then came to Minnesota. I thought the bike was a Harley, but it's a Suzuki, and it sold for $3750. I don't know what the doodlebugs went for.

I watched a '30 Standard Roadster in much, much worse shape than this one sell for the same money last September in NW Illinois at an estate sale.

I'd think that the money would be better spent if you ponied up another 12 grand and got a nice running Roadster driver quality car, that really didn't need much done to it. You can spend $12,000 on a project like this real fast and wonder where the money went

obviously the new owners are not educated in the what expenditure is required to restore a car in this condition. They had better be in it for the fun because they will never recoupe their investment. Wayne

Have to agree that the parts were poorly sorted and grouped. Bought quite a bit and even got a free tree with one of the frames. After the auction it was nice to deal with a junk man that was willing to sell parts out of his scrap iron purchases.

All depends of the buyer's motivation, did he just want the body and a few other ancillary pieces for a hot rod? Or was he a restorer that was looking to rebody a sedan to an open car. Or naturally it could have been a first time buyer that paid too much in some eyes but if he was happy so what? Lots of ways there to have realized a fair price, at least in the buyer's eyes.

Fordors, I talked to that buyer after the sale and he was going to restore the car to original. Not some young naive guy he was about 55 years old and said he had restored several Model A's.

I guess I didn't see what HE saw. Your labor has to count for something.
