Default 15 inch truck wheels:

Does anybody know if these 1964 Ford truck wheels will fit a 1940 Ford? They have the tabs in and the size is 15" 5 x 5 1/2"

Yeah they do. The truck wheels are a popular fitment on the 40s Fords.

These are called “semi-drop center” two piece wheels. They are Ford TAAA 1007-B (either K-H 37717 or Motor Wheel 34983). Used by Ford from 1954 to 1966 for sure, and probably later. They were a heavier duty wheel than standard one piece drop center types. They have the “innie” hub cap mounting. Stu

The 1940 16” x 4.00” drop center one piece (KH 22977 / Ford 01A-1015) has an 8.092” hub cap mounting circle. This 15” has the same. My concern in commenting was to make sure you understand these are two piece wheels. They have a 5.50F Firestone RHP design outer rim. You’re not gonna get tires mounted at the local Walmart. Stu

Stu,what do you mean by two piece wheels?I have 15 inch wheels on my 1952 Ford truck that take the stock hub cap but it sounds like these wheels I was going to buy are not the same.

Those aren’t original to your 52 F-1 either. A lot of owners swapped the original 16” x 4.5” (KH 31283 / Ford 8C 1015) wheels for some later era 15” x (probably) 5.00” one piece drop center wheels. The two piece variety are as pictured in the below cross section diagram. Perfectly good wheels, just not simple to have serviced at garden variety tire shops. You’ll need to find a truck tire shop, or old guy that knows what he’s doing mounting the solid unbroken rings. Stu

Stu,I called the gentleman back that has the wheels for sale and he said they were the standard one piece wheel Ford used from 1964 back to 1955 or so on trucks. When you say two piece do you mean the wheel is heavy duty with the split ring?Sorry for all the questions but I want to make sure these wheels will work on my 40 and not buy something I can't use.

Unless your picture is playing tricks I think I see an outer ring. The ring itself on the RHP design is solid/unbroken, not split. The ring must be squeezed past the base rim which is why no regular tire shop will touch them. The two part rims were a heavy duty option. You might ask him for better pictures, and maybe pictures of all four with close ups of that outer rim lip. Stu

I've had quite a few of the '66 and earlier 15" pickup one piece steel wheels with
the "innie" hubcap nubs, and there is NO problem mounting tires on them.

I think truckdog is mistaken your picture. They look like garden variety 15" truck wheels that would look great on a '40.

Well sure, but is it a one piece or two piece wheel. Why is there what looks like a seam around the lip, and a rusted look to the base rim? If the picture is simply playing tricks, then we go back to the original question about hub cap mounting. The “innie” hub caps will fit. Stu

These were 15 inch wheels I had on a 40 sedan years ago .I think they were truck wheels. The tires were radial 225/75R 15's and it rode and drove nicely.

truckdog, if you click on his picture of the wheel, it Enlarges, and is
then pretty clear, it is a one piece standard 15" 1/2 ton pickup wheel.

40ford, if the wheels have the "innie" hubcap nubs, then your '40 caps will fit.

Well I did that, and saved the pic to my iPhone picture folder. And enlarged it there. But it is a just a phone, not a 27” pc screen. So, okay. Stu

Make sure those wheels have the bigger center hole. Those will fit a banjo rear and are pick up truck
The wheels with the smaller hole are car wheels and will not fit either the front hub or the rear hub. That will make you mad....

==============================================

All the Ford wheels I have seen, for early car, '40 thru '48, and
1/2 ton pickup, '40 thru '66, have a 3 3/8" center hole.
Some other model pickup or car wheels with the 5.5" bolt circle
could have a smaller or larger center hole.

Some of the Mopar and Jeep wheels have 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern, however the center opening is smaller so they don't really fit Fords.
The wheels shown in the original posting to the topic are definitely one piece F-100 Ford 5 on 5.5 wheels of 1964-66 vintage.
