Default Model A Transmission Gear

A friend is restoring a Midget race car with a V8-60 motor. The crank in the V8 has a Model A transmission gear bolted to the end of the crank. These cars are an "in or out" affair as far as the drive line is concerned. The gear on the crank is striped and it is supposedly made from a Model A transmission gear, but which one? The gear is cut down with a special lathe tool for extremely hard metal.

Does anyone know about this arrangement or know anyone who could possibly help us?

Thanks so much, John Young, Alamo A's San Antonio.

Smile Re: Model A Transmission Gear

The V8-60 Midget that I recently sold had a combination of the input shaft and the second /high slider that made up the in/out. I can't remember which one was welded to the flange that bolted to the crank and which one was in the in/out box. It isn't the outside gear on the slider that is used, only the inside part that connects with the input shaft. I don't know if this is how all of them operated, but it sounds like we had similar setups. Hope this helps.

When we ran midgets back in the 70's and 80's, there was a " button " bolted
on the back of the crank, that fit the Ford input spline. It was store bought, heat
treated and never gave up. You should have no problem finding one, except for
the bolt pattern to the crank. Google the part or suppliers, check ebay.

What is the diameter of the gear? Is it a single gear or possibly cut from the cluster gear? That should define it or at least narrow it down.

I worked on one not long ago, it had a store bought piece on it with a spline on the inside that fit a input shaft from a in and out box.
