Default Outside mirrors

My new/old 54 Ranch Wagon has outside mirrors mounted
on top of fenders. They look orig but can't see anything
because of A post. All pics look like these should be mounted
below vent window? If I remount will I be able to see well on
both sides? Also any aftermarket peep mirrors work good?
Thanks Bob

In my experience, peep mirrors look cute but give a small picture. A door mount by the vent window works well for the left side, never tried on on the right. I get by with only one outside.

I've got a 54 Ranch Wagon ( bought from the original owner) and it's got those fender mounted mirrors - I think they are original. Car is not on the road so i can't comment on the field of vision.

I have seen both, the majority being a single mirror on the drivers door. That's where it is on my Ranchwagon. With all that glass there is not much of a blind spot.

I would not use peep mirrors, They are small and the mount chips your paint.

There are mirrors available on ebay that have 4" convex heads and there are several mounts available, including peep. I have the 4" convex peep mirrors on both sides of my early Ford (not the avatar car). Because of the rounded body sides they don't show the rear, but do a great job of showing the sides and blind spots so common in those cars. They even show the ground and help a lot in backing up. The convex is not so extreme as to distort the vision but it does expand the field of view.

Hey, Good observation. I have some 1955 Ranchwagon brochures and an ad from a 1955 Saturday Evening Post and none show mirrors. Wonder if the where options and you got to pick the style.

I second 40Cpe's comments. I have a 4" convex peep mirror on my '57 Ranchero and it works well. Granted I don't have the blind spot with the Ranchero like most cars have.

I'm pretty sure side view mirrors were an option back then on most cars.
My Father bought a new '63 Dodge, and had to order the side view mirror for the driver's side. Not standard. I also have a 1955 Ranch Wagon (base Mainline version) with the original paint, and there is no mirror on either side and no holes or eveidence in the paint that there were ever any.
