I have in my spares a black steering wheel ,that looks very near to the 33 and 34 ones ,BUT ,it is about 1/2 inch bigger in diameter and has a thicker rim.
to fit a tapered shaft and has two keyways in it.
Any idea what year its from.

Without a picture, I am guessing it is perhaps a '32 replacement steering wheel. Ford changed the location of the keyway midway thru the year to relocate the top spoke to the bottom. Pat

Yes, about the same as the 33/34 ones in my cars

It has all of the appearances of a normal '33-'34 wheel except for the key ways. When there are two key ways in a Ford steering wheel they are exactly opposed to one another, not side by side.

With all due respect, I don't agree with DavidG's sysnopsis. I am in the middle of disassembling my original '33 to rebuild the steering box. Today, I removed the steering shaft nut, and as you can see in the photo, there are two key ways and they are not opposed to one another. The key ways are about 20 degrees apart. I acquired this car in the early 1990s, it's an early '33 and it's about as original as they get. See the photo where the arrows point out the two key ways.

Mike, I think the two keyways are so that you can either have the spoke at the top or the bottom when straight ahead, I have mine at the bottom to easily see the speedo.
I got the NOS bearings etc for the 33 box and drag link from Barnfind here on the forum.
Also dont fit the cork gasket between the sector housing and main housing, I used an O ring,
I will get back with the part number of it.
also I put a small seal where the sector shaft comes out.

This gearbox and a second one that I disassembled this week were both packed with grease. I'll take the forum's consensus of filling them with grease instead of oil after I rebuild them.

Not grease like wheel bearing grease, John Deere cornhead grease. It's semi liquid.

As Mart posted, do not use anything like axle grease, it will not lubricate the gears surfaces properly. Cornhead grease is different, it turns to a fluid state when under a load or heat.

O rings for the sector housing are either BS-138 or BS-139
Just get them from a hydraulic shop 70 duro.
I just drove Kpars 33 with one of flathead teds boxes in ,VERY nice.

Low drip point or melt point grease works well in the old Ford
steering box's. High temperature grease will stay in place when hot
and the gear cuts a hole in the center and the gears run dry. When the
low temp grease gets warm it sags down to the bottom and the gears
pick up lubrication. They don't leak with grease if the gaskets are good.
