Starter windings . . . a Look-See
I don't know what I was expecting to see, but here's a look at the windings from a rebuild I'm attempting.

Honestly, what I am seeing is a starter that was overheated. Not sure if it was because of the lacquered cloth being old, -or from a 12 volt electrical source that overheated everything. Most everything is available in aftermarket for these things. You can likely rebuild it yourself. |

I've seen coils in a similar condition. I put it down to the cloth covering having rotted. It was very fragile. I had better on the shelf so I switched them but repair shouldn't be too difficult.

Cloth friction tape to repair, don’t use plastic tape, then spray them good with electrical insulating varnish. I got a can at Grainger. Mine looked similar, not quite as bad. I also re insulated wire leads by braiding linen cord over frayed areas and then varnishing. I would show you but I can never get pictures on here.
