You have a lifetime ahead of you to own different cars and have fun with them. Don't get too married to the idea you'll pick out a favorite the very first time. Get used cars with life left in them for daily drivers, and learn how to do common maintenance; brakes, plugs, oil changes, etc. Build a set of tools. Put some money in the bank. Those mechanical skills and experience gained will serve you well when you start owning older cars.

And while flashy cars will make you think you'll get more girls, know that I dated my wife to be in a $150 beater compact car. (probably a $1,000 beater car today)

I hate to see you go.

You are skipping a great car, now pushing 100 years old and a community of great people.

Only today I took a new member on a Model A tour of 160 miles over hills of some significance and many rural roads which a companion Model A driver had never seen. This is a rare experience in Southern California.

Good luck in whatever choice you make. Hopefully it will be to stay with us.

If you have storage room you could get a Model A engine for peanuts, put it in a stand, pull it apart, see how it works, and see if you can get it to run. These are great engines to learn about mechanics, that's why so many people like them. The Chevrolet manuals of the 30's and 40's are good reading to explain how things work.

Here are my two penny's worth. Obviously you know your finances and we don't-that being said there are a few 'upgrades' that you can do. Since you live in a 'hilly' area, you can convert to juice brakes or you learn to set your brakes up correctly and drive within their limits. If you want some more speed you can add a high comp head, bigger/more carbs or an overdrive.

Now, you have to do what you deem best for you but I think you would be missing out on a lot of good memories and skills to be learned. The flip side is that a corolla is safer and gets better MPG and is cheaper to own. But, it is boring! How about having both? A daily driver and weekend warrior?

Good luck in whatever you do bud. Sounds like you have a plan.

One comment on the 29% interest..... YIKES..... glad I don't live in Canada that is crazy At that kind of money you WOULD stay financially healthy with your present car ownership ideas.

I've been pricing 2022 Mustang GT's. They are expensive no doubt, but you get a lot of car for the money. SO I started hunting around for a 4-5 year old Mustang GT and they aren't much cheaper than a brand new one. Miles vary some have 19,000 miles some have up to 55,000 miles. That and unless you know the guy that owned the car they probably have had the snot beat out of them. Not cheap no matter what route you take.

When I was a kid, owning a mustang and being able to go fast meant everything. After owning several mustangs and still love them, there is nothing like cruising in a model A. Anybody can drive an old muscle car. Even with a stick shift they are easy to drive. A model A on the other hand, you pretty much don't have to worry about anyone stealing it because they don't know how to start it. And, going 50 to 55 mph in a model A is like a thrill ride.

Not all Mustangs are fast. My parents had a '73 Mustang convertible with a 3 speed automatic and a 302 V8. It was peppy in 1st gear, but that was it. 2nd and 3rd were boring. Gorgeous looks and fun to put the top down. With all the 1st gen anti pollution stuff it got 13 mpg.

It rusted out.

Why not seek a part time job maybe in a body shop or car related business. Birthday money doesn’t add up very quickly. If you want enough money to buy a car you’ll have to work for it.

If you're not happy with the pace in a Model A, you can either pull more horsepower out of it (easy to double it) or learn to slow down and smell the roses (or is that oil fumes?).
I enjoy my A most when I'm in the right frame of mind and happy to get where ever at my own pace and ignore those impatient souls in their fast cars. I'll see them at the next red light anyway.
Just my thoughts but you do what ever you like - it's your money, your life.

Without a part time job your dream of owning a car of any kind is unrealistic. Birthday money one day a year does not create enough wealth to purchase or maintain a vehicle let alone gasoline and insurance. Sorry it had to be me to be the one to burst the bubble

High 60s is not bad but it's nothing to write home about either. There is an old saying:
Good better best
Never let it rest
till your good is better and your better, best.
IMO, you have the right attitude and you will never regret putting in he effort now. It will make the ret of your life sooo much better (and easier). I wish I had given me that advice!

I agree you should focus on your education but if nothing else you have 3 months of summer holidays. A summer job would likely result in a few thousand dollars.

Are you interested in owning a car or are you interested in mechanical stuff and learning more about how things work? In the first case, save up your money and buy a car where most of the work has been done. In the second case, buy a car that needs lots of work and tear it apart and rebuild it.

In my case, I was always interested in the mechanical aspects and when 14 bought an old, inexpensive, car to rebuild.

Ok, picture is a bit clearer now, sorry I have not followed all of your posts. How about this, you want a car (preferably an A) and your parents want good grades. strike a deal that gets you the car you want but that you can't drive it until your grades get into the 'B' range-and stay there. Plus you may have to work on it so that keeps you more into the grades until your junior/senior year of H.S. But, at least you can work on it the rest of the time and get it fixed up to be reliable for years to come.

This way you get the mechanical experience, good grades and over the summer you get a job to earn the money to buy parts. Which leads you down the road of being financially responsible. It is a win, win, win, win situation.

Just my 2 cent worth.

When I was your age I nearly bought a Model A Tudor. I had a part time job and was able to come up with the $600 asking price. The car was original but needed brakes, a complete rebuild of the steering and front axle, some window glass, transmission rebuild, engine work, etc. etc. I also had plans for college with no financial support from my family. It was a hard decision because I had long wanted a Model A but I passed on it and continued on to college with my beater '49 Chev. Had I bought the Model A, my direction would have led me down a path of spending money on the car and with no other resources of time or finance to continue my education.

I am forever happy that I waited until I had a degree, a good job, and the resources to pursue the Model A hobby. Aside from my bride, it was the best decision I ever made.

One of the hard things about being a teenager is having lots of ideas and desire, but little money to carry it out. And you are at a low point in your earning ability as well. Focus on school, that's #1. Find part time work an get a cheap car to work on. Plenty of those around. My second car once I decided to start banking some money, was a $150 Ford Pinto that needed a water pump., the hood paint was ruined, and had the rear quarter window broken. Drove it about 3 years, learned to do brakes, points, belts and lots of other work on that car. It was a good way of sifting through the gold diggers vs the women with vision as well.

I did the same wanted a model a in the worst way but had to settle for a 67 mustang fastback (400 dollars and was a driver) I did all the paint motor and interior work in high school with the help of my dad. I was 28 before I got my model a. Things have changed now I can afford the a but not the mustang!

My neighbor and I are the same age and were both old Ford crazies. When we were 16, we found a '40 Ford Coupe with no engine or tranny and it seemed to be pretty solid. To us anyway. The floorpans were rotted away and the glass and interior were toast, the chrome work was all blistering, a large tree branch had fallen on it at one time and crunched the roof in,,,, you get the picture.

When my friend brought it home on a trailer Pop walked over to see it and said 'What are you two going to do with THIS?' and we said 'Restore it.'

He broke out laughing, shook his head, and walked back into the house.

We looked at each other, and thought 'Maybe he's right' and sold it the next week for a small profit!

A 67 fastback for a first car How are you still alive
I would have killed myself in a 67 7 times over

Actually my first car that I drove on the street was a 64 and a half mustang coupe. One night after work I took a coworker home and it was just 5 30 on a january night I was coming up to a four lane street and the road glazed over and I slid out into the street and when hit by one car and swung around and was hit by a second. Obviously totaled it. My father was quite pleased with me. I had the 67 at the time and was in the process of making it a nice car but I really didn't get to drive it a lot before I was forced to sell it after I was in another accident in a 72 opel gt that i had just finished again my father was pleased with me, he made me sell the mustang to pay for the opel and buy a 72 cutlass to drive to college. I think he was more than fair with me and he got his pay back with one of my son's. In retrospect his anger was not about the cars but he was scared to lose a child which we all understand. Funny story about him he was 96 and in hospice and I asked him if he ever quit worrying about his children and his reply was "hopefully soon" . Sorry for the long ramble.
