Suggestions on Battery Cut off switch

This is from the Summit Racing website on the American Autowire 500834:






These American Autowire remote master disconnect switches are made of high-quality materials. They have a voltage compatibility of 6 to 36 V and operate off of a push-button disconnect and reconnect switch.


Says it is good for 6 volts.

I found a Cole-Hersee Boston made one on the dreaded eBay, nice quality switch.

Mine is on the floor, right behind and centered between the seats. I use a "2nd" battery, much cheaper, hasn't needed a charge in 12 years.

Is the switch located on the Pos.+ side or the Neg.- of the batterie?

That is a whole other can of worms. I believe the sanctioning bodies say switch the hot (positive terminal). On my '39 I switch the ground (negative)
With the ground disconnected you don't have the issue of a spark if you accidentally touch a hot wire to ground. With the hot disconnected you still have the chance of a spark if the positive terminal on the battery some how makes contact to ground. JMO.

Picked up an old original Cole-Hersee, PO said it was installed but it looks like new, any way to test it before I install it?

If you forget and leave a solenoid switch latched -on-for a couple of weeks will it drain the battery?

IMO, best idea. Terminals & ends are tapered of soft lead. So push down & twist to lock on. Lift up & twist the other way to unlock off. Always done it this way with tapered terminals. Jack E/NJ

I went with a Intellitec dual latching relay and a remote door lock. My battery was moved to the rumble seat area and it was a pain to climb into the rumble seat to get to the battery disconnect.

I moved the battery off the floor and mounted it under the hat shelf using a drop down battery box.


This is the dual latching relay powered by remote door lock key fob and a backup toggle switch. I had to use two 5 pin relays to reverse the polarity to operate the dual latching relay.


I mounted remote battery posts for jumpstarting if needed.


Intellitec dual latching relay. Mainly used for marine and campers batteries.

Thanks for the reply, I know this setup might be a little more complex than some may want, but for me it’s a convenient solution.

In short it’s a battery cut off switch that you can turn off and on with a remote key fob. It works the same as it does on a modern car when you lock and unlock the doors only in this case it is turning the battery on and off. Hope this gives a little more clarity to my earlier post.
