Water Pumps...rebuild or new?
I noticed a burning rubber-type smell when I ran my ’37 engine (in ’36 Cabriolet). I finally traced it to the right water pump not turning causing the generator belt to rub on the pump pulley. Assuming a failed pump (belt was appropriately tensioned since left pump turned), do I rebuild the pumps (Skip or ?) or purchase new? I would appreciate your comments/thoughts.

Re: Water Pumps...rebuild or new?
I've always found that water pumps are about the only part that rebuilt is as good as a new one. Maybe better nowdays since they use a lot better seals than the NOS ones would have.

Re: Water Pumps...rebuild or new?
Most of the new pumps available from Drake, Carpenter, Speedway, and others, are coming from China and if your main thought is to save a few $$'s, they may be your choice.
Fryers is the only source, to my knowledge, for new USA mfg'd pumps with original part numbers stamped in the castings to satisfy judging standards. This may be the most expensive way to go, but the quality is good. Skip Haney is your best choice if you want a set of original cast in part number pumps rebuilt to perfection by a true American craftsman who backs his work 100%. He has rebuilt at least six sets of pumps for me (3 sets of '35's & 3 sets of '37-'48) and I could not be happier with the quality and performance of these pumps. You must decide what is best and most important to you.

Re: Water Pumps...rebuild or new?
I installed a pair of the Chinese pumps before I new better. Had some trouble because they are of poor quality. I would go the Skip rebuild route next time.
