Default Overdrive using electronic ignition

I recently sold 2 overdrive transmissions for cars that did not previously have overdrive. After the fact I found out that both have electronic ignition. Normally in kickdown the solenoid momentarily grounds out the ignition. How would they wire this and would a ground harm the electronic ignition.

We just talked about this on another thread. Pertronix will provide you with the resistor value and wiring diagram to make it work. Cecil says he did not use a resistor and his has worked for 5 years. Take your pick.

As I remember the OD relay shorted out the points momentarily. When I converted my boat to electronic ign [with a Mercruiser outdrive] I shorted out the leg from the brain to the coil (GM HEI). Depending on your particular electronic ign not too sure if your electronics would take it.
The old Mercruiser outdrive shifted from forward to reverse in the same manner as an OD trans (having to remove engine torque during the shift).

Probably a better method is to take a relay and cut the B+ feed momentaily using the OD relay as the trigger.

This last post reminded me that I, too, converted a boat with a Mercruiser Alpha I stern drive to a Pertronix at least 20 years ago. At that time, I didn't give a thought to the shift ignition interrupter. That unit operated flawlessly for over 10 years until I sold it.

I too converted a Volvo-Penta outdrive and engine with a Pertronix unit. No problems.
