has anyone replaced the O ring in this 1951 heater control valve?

I guess what i'm trying to accomplish is the replacement of a 50 cent O-ring as opposed to a $150 control valve.

Not an O ring but some type of packing material- Does not appear to be field repairable. I bypassed heater control valve for now and connected hoses directly to heater core inlet and outlet. will be looking for a rebuilt unit I see they are available.
