Engine Failures
Just want to put this out for consideration, all beware. In the recent weeks I have had 3 motors come in with leakage at the rear and once the pan was removed, the failure was clear. The babbitt was broken at the thrust and the bearing cracked. Also, the center and front main were not bonded because of improper tinning. These engines were recent rebuilds that barely made it out of a warranty or t was disheartened with the builder so, they brought them to me. I won't divulge any names because I don't want to seem like I am bashing a particular builder for personal gain, the gain is there regardless. I will say, you cannot do it all. A "Jack of all trades" is most certainly a master of none.

Read the posting on peening. Does not sound like the babbitt was peened.

The Model A , rear thrust, the Babbitt flows over the Radius, and then forms into a flat thrust that just lays on the Block, or cap. We peen that also, or it would never last. We use about a 40 degree angle to peen it. The B's advantage is the Babbitt, after flowing over the Radius, goes into a keyed area, and that holds the Babbitt flange from spreading out and breaking away. We can't get in to peen the rear flange, so we use a press. Herm. |
