Default starter click?

For a couple of days I have experienced an occasional click when starting my 52 Vic. Not all the time but once in a while. i cant tell if it is my ignition switch or the starter or the voltage regulator. The battery is ok and the car will eventually start. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a poor electrical connection(s)......clean the battery terminals, as well as all grounds to the engine. Also clean the starter motor terminals. Also check the battery cables for corrosion. If that does not solve your problem.....check the amperage draw on your starter...it may be on life support.....

You probably need a new starter solenoid. Looks like this.

Make sure the one you buy matches the one you now have.

What kind of "click"?
A chattering click could be corroded or loose connections, or weak battery.
A "one click" and no crank is probably the solenoid. Sometimes it takes a few clicks before the solenoid makes a good contact. In either case, replace.

It COULD be a problem with the solenoid itself. It could also be a poor connection anywhere along the BATTERY Cable circuit. It COULD also be a bad GROUND at the "Start" button. The fact that it DOES eventually start leads me to believe the solenoid IS NOT the problem. DD

I had the same problem... a click and no cranking. Cables and grounds all good, and it was the solenoid. Got a new one from Dennis Carpenter, and it was bad out of the box. Frustrating! Bought one at NAPA and problem was solved, but it doesn't look original.

Ya know, it sure doesn't cost much (like about $0.00) to go through and clean all three connections on the solenoid, two at the battery, one at the battery GROUND cable, plus the grounding of the Start button to the dash.....any of which being dirty/corroded or loose, could cause your symptom. Just sayin'! DD
