Default Two transmission cases

One has a keeper ring and the other it is cast into the case. Why the difference?

The one that has cast bearing stops the case is an early style case. One or two of the cases with cast bearing stops require thrust washers on each end of the cluster gear. However one doesn't need thrust washers. The snap ring cases don't require thrust washers. Actually there were 4 or 5 cases Ford used. I think there were 2 or 3 of the case with cast in bearing stops. Ford must have been able to save a few cents in going to the snap ring style. I saw an article that described the different case, but I can't remember where it was - maybe the Judging Guidelines.
