Default rear hub puller

Does anyone rent a rear hub puller that will work on model A's? Re-packing the front was easy yesterday.

I've used a three pronged puller rented from my local auto parts store. Actually it was loaned. They charge for it in case you break it or don't bring it back but refund your money when you return it.

I just bought one from Mitchell. They are under $100 and will work for both kinds of hubs.

(Owning a Model A is just an excuse to buy more tools!)

I picked up this monster (very heavy and very heavy duty!) cause the price was right. Has anyone had any experience with this type of puller?

Try http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...ls_forsale.htm for to rent a puller. Be warned that this puller may not work on some of the early Model A hubs. You might post a picture of your rear hub (or send it to Mac when you rent the puller). Do it right, don't take any short cuts on the puller.

pgerhardt...that is a Snap-on Dreadnaught puller. The 3 arms are for the lug patterns like Mopar and Studebaker that were a bit smaller than the For 5 1/2" circle.
It came with two extra arms (arms snap out with puller relaxed) to pull Ford hubs from the groove, same general approach as a Ford KRW puller.
This made the pull much safer for the hub and also made it fully usable on the '36-9 Fords with gigantic pattern.
The large Ford bolt circle and the very high load put into the hub/axle joint by proper tightening makes it possible to permanently warp hubs and even split brake drums on really tight pulls.
Ford expected the hubs to be pulled from central ring, and the good tool companies like KRW, Snap on, and Plomb all sold rigs that could do that. KRW was Ford groove only, Plomb and Snap on made their generic 3 arm pullers with special rigs for Ford use.

Thanks for the information. Looks like I'll need to find the Ford arms or this monster stays on the shelf in the "museum".

I have the same Snap On 3 leg puller and have used it by bolting to three studs, and not had a problem. I used it on a rusty 1930 AA and had to take several swings with a 5 pound sledge hammer before it finally came loose. That truck cured me from ever wanting to work on another AA.
If I did work on another AA, I'd probably become a member of AA.

I bought a Mitchell and it works great. You will need it anytime you should grease your rear end bearings and they should be greased. Therefore it makes sense to buy one. I think I paid $50 or $60 bucks for one at Bert's(I think)-sorry Steve if I miss quoted.

I used one like that that I borrowed from a neighbor and it worked great. A hotrodder in town here has a smaller one that has worked, too.
