Paint & clear coat
Hi gents
Will clear coat darken the look of the paint a little?

Re: Paint & clear coat
I like the look of the single stage Urethane without a clear coat. To my eye, it looks more like original paint then the ultra shiny "plastic" look of the clear.
That said, to each his own, I don't think it would appreciably darken your paint if you use it but it will certainly make it shiny. If you look at my album of my V8 coupe I am working on (I painted in my driveway), you can see that you can attain a decent smooth finish without the clear. |

Re: Paint & clear coat
I painted base/clear once to replace the bed on my wife’s pickup. As I remember It did change the paint color a shade or two, I wouldn’t say darker, but different.
That was the only time I’ve ever done the clear coat. Like Deuce Roadster I prefer to use single stage paint. I painted my first truck in the early 80’s before I had even heard of base clear. |

Re: Paint & clear coat
Thanks the problem is, I used high gloss rust-o-lium and it looks lighter and flatter than rest of body.

Re: Paint & clear coat
My '47 convertible is black with a clear coat. It looks very fine, and has the advantage of protecting the finish from exposure. Ford used lacquer in very early production because it was quick drying, and resisted fuel spills, but was also quite flammable. Later finishes were enamel, such an acrylic. Now, due to emphasis on air quality, water based paint is common. It has the drawback of usually producing "orange peel" results, even in luxury cars.

Re: Paint & clear coat
If you scuff a panel say, a door, to blend a fender to a door you can get away with one coat of clear on the door where it meets the next panel before the color changes. In other words, clear will affect the color but it is not drastic and takes multiple coats before it makes a difference.

Re: Paint & clear coat
We don't use Rust-O-Leum at all. It tends to react to almost all paints, clear or other, and comes out looking like crackle finish in most cases. The key to a good paint job is to use only materials of the same brand, from the primer thru the clear coat.
