Default early 28 steering gear

My 28 has what looks like the brass packing nut off a waterpump below the gear and above the light switch. Would this be original or something someone added to control leaking with packing?

Most likely the oil seal retaining nut.

What you have is the early style lower bearing retainer, used with the open bail light switch. How early is your car?

My car is a very early 28, four digit serial number and yes, it looks like the pic above.
