I need a painting tutorial
It's been 33 years since I last painted a car, and I know things have changed. Can someone suggest a good tutorial (book, brochure, DVD, web site?) on current methods, prep, materials, safety precautions, and equipment, or give me their experiences and recommendations? Something for a DIY guy?

Ray, this is a prime example of "experience is something you have after you need it"!! I'm not so sure just how much 'technique' you can gain by watching a video. Practice is the best teacher IMO.

Re: I need a painting tutorial
I think I have retained the basic moves, because I worked with an airbrush for 30 years or so doing artwork, and I believe the muscle memory is still there. But I am vastly ignorant about current materials and methods of prep.

Re: I need a painting tutorial
Wow. Youtube is vast! The answers are probably there. I'd still like to hear any tips and hints you all might have.

Roy,
You may want to consider checking with your local community college/vocational school. In my area (Gaithersburg, Md.) they offered a 14 week (one night a week) auto body painting class. I took this class and it gave me the "practice" and confidence to paint my 29 coupe. Hunter |

Re: I need a painting tutorial
There are some nice articles here in Hemming’s. I learned allot about the "new" spray guns and paints available.

Eastwood has some DVD's but I do not know how good they are. Here is an interesting link: http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com...ct%20paint.htm

Re: I need a painting tutorial
I've found some helpful videos on YouTube. Just don't watch the ones that are obviously not professionals in the field of painting. Another way is find a body shop and ask if you can hange around a few days to watch and pick up on some tips. Base/clear can be an expensive to practice without any instructions. If you've painted before it'll be pretty easy to grasp the concept on how to paint with more modern paints.

Re: I need a painting tutorial
700.....I've been painting for 35 years or so and mostly the only thing that's changed is the materials. It is best to stick with catalyzed materials. They wont shrink like the old nitrocellulose primers did.In a nutshell:bodywork, etch prime, filler primer, sand, sealer, base coat and then clear.Just pretend it's someone else's car.I was told once that the closest thing to a perfect paint job is just before it runs.My '36 was almost perfect.
