Default Question? Peened inner front wheel bearing

My right front inner (the larger)wheel bearing has been Peened to the front spindle. What is the best way to ensure that I have enough grease loaded into the bearing, as I can't remove it from the spindle? I have used needle adapter for my grease Gun-- seems to work
Thanks for your Help!

Why not repair it correctly and replace the spindle assy?? If the snout of the spindle has been staked, you cannot properly set the bearing preload. If the outer bearing fails, there is a strong potential to lose steering control. This should not be a costly repair however it should be a priority because of safety factor.

If the outer bearing fails you have a potential to loose steering no mater how the inner is held on? I guess I do not understand how having the inner bearing staked to the spindle (many cars have had that done) affects the preload and will cause loss of steering if outer bearing fails. ? I would agree that a better spindle would be best course of action in any case.

Ok, I see what you are saying. Remove the drum/hub and then remove the inner bearing. Take a file and keep working the raised areas down until the bearing has a nice 'slip fit', -then repack it with grease and install normally.

Hi Brent,
OK, Got that, But the The inner Bearing is on the spindle Very Tight! I'm not sure I can get it off the spindle without damaging the Bearing?

Use a set of wedges, -or a bearing splitter.

Bearings are low in cost and might be able to get at local parts store. For cars they were the same up to 48.

Is the bearing staked on the spindle after the bearing was slid on ? Can you see the stake marks ? If so, I would think a dremel or file would work. Also see if you can drive a chisel behind the bearing to push it forward on the spindle.

If that doesn't work then remove the rollers and cage. An acetylene torch can be used to heat a a red hot spot on the race and take 2 ball peen hammers and whack the race on the hot spot to expand the race. [ the ball of one hammer on the hot spot them whack that hammer with the second one.

A grinder can also be used to split the race.

I used a Dremel tool to slit it almost to the spindle. Then hit the slit with chisel and split it enough to slide it off. I then cleaned up axle as Brent recommended.

If they used Loctite you may need to use a little heat. Only heat up the bearing race though, do not heat the spindle too much. Loctite will release with heat.

For those of us who haven't experienced this, why would someone peen or stake the inner wheel bearing to the spindle?

A previous bearing may have seized and spun on the spindle making the new bearing loose. Maybe someone thought the bearing wouldn't stay in place, who knows what happens sometimes.

A factory issue from Ford when I was a kid were undersized spindles/ loose bearings. Rather than replace those spindles Fords fix was to prick punch the spindle and install the bearing. Didn't seem right to me, but, it was their fix and many were done with no issues.

Slightly undersized spindles with a loose inner bearing race seems to be the case on my '31, the race for inner bearing turns smoothly on the spindle. A very experienced club member said the spindle and bearings were in good shape, but he recommended peening the spindle at three points around the spindle, then filing it so the race fits tighter and doesn't spin. Seems odd though, is this the correct way to address the issue? If not addressed does this eventually damage the spindle and create wobble in the front?

I got all new bearings and races from my NAPA dealer. Just give them the Timken numbers and they are easily cross-referenced.

This is WRONG, the inner bearing race should be a slip fit on the spindle, as Brent said in post#6.

How would you define slip fit? As is it slides onto the spindle, it's not loose like there's any play but it can be turned by hand. Seems like it's good to go as is.
