Default Fmd

I'm shopping for a gas can, something I haven't needed to do for quite a few years. It seems the hottest (pun intended) new technology is the FMD - Flame Mitigation Device.

Look familiar?

Is that necessary with a plastic gas can?

Some wet-behind-the-ears engineer happened to look in a Model A gas tank, and came up with an idea to steal! What's old is new again!

Well maybe it is needed. A plastic gas container slid across the plastic bed liner can static spark and explode. Yes you are not saposta fill while sitting in the bed, but not all are that smart. Right up there with using a vacuum to suck gas out! LOL

The "new and improved" gas cans all seem to have a spout that you have to push against the tank your filling to allow the fuel to flow out. What a pain in the rear!!!
Try filling a small tank on something like a line trimmer with one and a spill is almost a sure thing.
I take them off and replace them with the old style replacement filler necks and vent tubes that are now available at hardware stores etc...

They say the FMD won't prevent ignition of gas external to the can (like sliding it across a bed liner), only fumes inside the can. Not saying it's not a good thing - just think it's funny they're now hyping an idea Henry came up with 90+ years ago.

They had been around for many decades before Henry copied the idea.
The operating principle of flame arresters was discovered in 1815 by Sir Humphry Davy, a famous chemist and professor at the Royal Institution in England.

Ace Hardware sells spouts without teh safety feature, meant for tractors, etc needing high flow. I think it was 2 for $10

And IMHO, they sold a LOT of so called "improved" cans without really improving them.

Neighbor (a non-mechanical doctorate) calls me regularly when he can't get his lawnmower started. Usually he's left either the lawnmower, the can, or both out in the rain so his gasoline is contaminated thereby killing the lawnmower.

New "idiot-proof" cans are the primary cause of contamination. Water is caught by the open-ended nozzle pipe and sits on top of the proprietary "valve" built into all of these now. You go to use the can and OF COURSE in picking it up you have to put your hand around the toggle/lever which releases the valve and opens the can - and thereby cause the caught water to drop by gravity into the can.

Next refill, the lawnmower stops.

So after struggling for the afternoon he hands it all over to me - the mechanically inclined - to straighten out.

Then he buys a new lawnmower and gas can (Doctorates make good money I guess) and next season proceeds to do similar.

I have at least four of his gas cans I've converted to the simple spout. Probably close to three gallons of fuel cleared/water washed/separated and run in my own mower. And (bonus) a lawnmower he got tired of trying to start and headed to the dump which I have now cleared of water and runs fine.

I'm not sure if this post is a gloat, a complaint, or just life among the mechanically incompetent in our US today?

True. The award of a degree does not bestow competence in anything, it seems. For most it's just a ticket to ride. I've met more dumbbells with degrees than those without.

Education, like health care, has become simply a for-profit enterprise; service is only secondary.

The old style plastic cans still can be found at garage sales and so on! They are getting harder to find, but every once in a while one pops up! Some folks price them out of reality! Not for me!
