Default Aluminum block almost finished.

Only a few more items to cut and then programming is proved out for the 1st machining OP.

Tod - sure looks like the real deal!! Thanks for your pioneering work on this. Are the bearing caps aluminum as well? Dave

I haven't made caps yet. I can certainly make aluminum caps.

Hey Tod,
Very nice , thanks for the picture of progress. Hope machine programming is all working out to your expectations !

Look sturdy, maybe get 150 HP out of it

If you saw me do it, you would say it's all pretty routine and simple. It is very boring and takes almost no effort, except forcing myself to actually do it.

Can you tell us how the casting was made and do the external features look exactly like an "A" engine? Did you modify the water cooling passages or are they the same as the orignals?

Do you plan to sleeve the cylinders ?

I would not gamble all that work on Al bearing caps .

The cylinders will be sleeved. Given that 12000 HP top fuel cars run aluminum main caps, I don't see any problem with a 100 HP aluminum engine running them.

I won't give out all my process details on how to make engine block castings. The externals are not exact, but close enough that most people would not be able to tell the difference. The water jacket is basically the same but will be much cleaner due to being new and using a better sand system to cast them.

No problem with Aluminum main caps!

I'm sure Tod's caps will be made from something close to 7075 T-6, and maybe
even hard Anodized..
With Aluminum main caps and block,..you need to pay close attention to the
main clearance,..it will change vs. Iron / Steel combinations..

Hey Tod,
Alum main caps sound good when taken in contest with this information !

Do you anticipate stamping any ID numbers on the pad for the engine # , or do you leave that to the customer

Today I totally finished all 1st OP A programming and machining. 1st OP B is next, which is the drilling of the 3 oil galleys that run from the 3 main journals to the main oil galley.

I left this block about .020 thick just in case I wanted to do any machining once it is out of the machine and also as a way to double check the full 4th B axis for accuracy as it repeatedly turned back and forth while I programmed and ran each tool over the last few weeks. Today I swapped pallets and brought it out for a "look see". I put the verneer calipers on it and from front to rear it is dead on parallel. .020 thick both ends.

Hi Tod, nice looking block, do you plan to use a cast iron head? 6:1 head ? Are the cam journals bushed? Are the head studs helicoiled in place? Thanks for your efforts, Barry B.
