Default wide 5 wheels

Hi, I have several wide 5 wheels, The issue I'm having is finding wheels that are true with no left to right wobble. I was wondering if anyone has a way to true them. I realize that most had a rough life years ago. I had them balanced with wheel weights which helped, but threw 2 weights going down the road causing fender dings. I took them off and tried counteract beads. Still have a wobble at 40 MPH. 600 x 16 Bias Ply. Any Ideas? Thanks Ray

I feel your pain as I switched to wide fives before my trip to the LA Father's Day Roadster show in '16 for my avatar. I went through about a dozen or more to find ones worthy enough to then be straightened. I then had five I sent off to a wheel shop that had the machine that then straightened the wheel lips and made them run out perfectly. I know you are in NH - mine were done on LI. Cost $50/wheel.

I then used dynabeads for balancing and I run tubeless radials. The biggest mistake most make is that you must use an old style tire mounting machine - the newer "finger" style machines may/will distort these rims by grabbing the outer lip of the rim. I have seen it happen.

So, between finding suitable rims, paying for the straightening, the dynabeads and the special valves, the tires and caps, I have a LOT of money invested but I love the look and they run smooth. If you want to play, ya gotta pay. I did the same thing with the mid-30s Plymouth artillery wheels I am using on my present 5-window hot rod project.
But, I really do love the look ....

Thanks for the info Tom. I also like the look of the wide 5's. I checked the web and found a couple shops in NH that work on steel wheels. Lets see if they've heard of wide 5's! LOL. If not what was the name of the shop you used? Kind Regads Ray

I guess I got lucky, I traded for a set off a 38 sedan a friend has. Put the tires and tubes on myself, no balancing and they run good.
