Default flywheel Q..

Have '49 merc engine 255cu, with 11" flywheel/clutch setup.
What, if any, problem whould be encountered installing an 11" aluminum 13 lb flywheel? And, does NO steel face on said flywheel cause concerns?

If this engine is going in a heavy car then I wouldn't go that lite with the flywheel, but if it's a smaller car then you should be OK.
If you're going to do mostly "stop and go driving", then I would want a different contact area for the disc than alum.
Just my $.02 worth.

Engine will stall a little easier at low speed, but you will quickly learn to manage it.
Ran a all aluminum Wilcap flywheel in my Olds powered '48 Ford coupe many years with no problems and very little wear. Sure makes an engine rev quickly and sound good. You won't regret useing it.

What are you mating the engine to? Best check your bell housing and/or adapter for clearance. Depending on your pressure plate, the knuckles might hit.

The 49 through early 51 Mercury had a 10-inch Borg & Beck clutch. The 11-inch Long type clutch was used in trucks. This may not be relevant to you since the truck clutch would work. The 49 through 51 series of Mercury cars were pretty heavy. Definitely more heavy than the 48 Ford cars. I think I would want something in the range minimum of 25 lbs, especially if your running overdrive. At 13 lbs, it's libel to stall when it goes into overdrive at low speeds. In any case , it would bog down after the shift.

You'll need a cast iron truck clutch housing. The Merc. stamped steel clutch housing will not clear the 11" clutch. If you can't find one, I've got one for you. [email protected]
