Default Running boards on 31 Budd cab

I'm in a bit of a quandry.. Being a little green to this and a little excited to get things together (once I'm done boiling sap) I ordered a new set of running boards for my truck. I just realized the ones I ordered are the rubber mat ones as opposed to the commercial ones that are presently on the truck and starting to wear through. I'm not trying to build a show truck, more of a fun driver. Any problems with the fitment or differences? I hate to pay shipping to change them out for the correct replacement.

thanks Mike in Maine

Maniac,
I'd consider the rubber ones as an UPGRADE!

I'm with Bill. The rubber ones won't scratch up like the painted ones.

On a side note. How's the maple syrup? The sap run here is pretty much over. Jeff

We have lots of saps running all over the place here most of the time.

I assume you have a pickup, not an AA. All-metal commercial boards are correct but AFAIK, the dimensions of all boards for a passenger chassis are the same within a given year. So the rubber mat ones should fit OK. And yes, they won't scratch up like the painted metal ones.

What do you guys do who use the commercial running boards to prevent peoples shoes from scratching the paint off?

Step over them or remove shoes before entering

I primed the boards with black DP90, then painted the top coat of PPG concept. If the paint wears through, it will still be black, and not a red ring of primer on each dimple. It has been about 18 years, and thousands of miles, and yes there are some scratches, but so what? The paint is still covering the metal.

I have a Budd cab late '31 wide bed pickup truck, and it has the (repro) stamped steel running boards. I simply put a T-shirt, towel, etc. on the running board and offer my hand to my wife; seems to work fine. But I must admit that the rubber ones would certainly be an upgrade, even if not totally original.

Spray on bed liner to protect the steel.

Bill,

I'm 5' 8" (maybe 5' 7" or 5' 6" by now) and I stand on the ground with my left foot and slide my right foot under the steering wheel to the gearshift to get in our Roadster. Never have put my foot on the running board even without Duluth Trading skivies!

A baseball bat! Really, I only wear rubber soled shoes, but here is what I did and what I do. When I painted them black I did a few coats of clear over the black with hardener in it. When I take them to shows I lay a rubber mat on top of them to protect them from shoes with grit and dirt on them, those young ones, and some older ones also at shows are quicker than I am, so this helps protect them. I try not to discourage interest trying to get others into the hobby.

Well, I guess I'm good to go! The sap is about done and whatever we collect this weekend the grandkids are doing all the gathering and boiling (mostly because they like clowning around with the snowmobile) and next week I will be painting rims, running boards, mounting tires and other prep to launching "Stilly".. named after my grandfather Stillman who instilled the love of vehicles in me with his Model T with snowmobile conversion and passion for Jeeps that had him buying a new CJ pretty much every two years till his death in 1967. There was always something interesting passing through his used car lot. The Model A truck choice after many years of muscle cars etc. was influenced by my 86 year old high school Latin teacher who had one he bought brand new that he let me drive when doing yard work for him. We are very much a sum of our experiences. thanks Mike
