Glad I took the fan advice!
Friday just gone, I sorted out a few bit's on the "A", including the new cast aluminium 2 blade fan.
The original 2 blade was a worrying sight, after we scraped a little paint off! Sorry for the poor pictures! Only had my phone at the time. I'm VERY glad we changed it now! The other blade had just the slightest start of a crack, but this one really surprised me. The car is very original, and has done nearly 100,000 miles.

Re: Glad I took the fan advice!
Well spotted.
I also have scrapped most of the paint off my original fan to check for cracks & so far [ 84 years] so good. Do you have a photo of your car to put up? |

Re: Glad I took the fan advice!
The rules for running any fan, including the new Aluminum fan.
You should only have a thin coating of paint that will show any cracks. From the looks of the picture, it appears like that fan had a thick coating of brushed on paint. Plus it is a bit blurry, but the one picture looks like there may even be some surface rust discoloration. The fact that you had to scrap off paint to find such a glaring crack is a good example of why you need to be careful about the how much paint you use on the fan. Please keep in mind this is for any fan you hang on your car. As all fans have had failures or possibly can fail. Frequent inspections are a must and not hard to do. |

Re: Glad I took the fan advice!
It does appear that there has been a prior repair by gas welding a small crack on the underside of one blade.
There is a repair designed for the original two blade fan by an aero engineer that has been published a number of years ago. My three cars have been running crack free original (reinforced) fans for a long time. I have strengthened 15 of the original fans using the published blueprint, all are running crack free. One went through fine point MARC judging without being "discovered". There are a number of threads on this repair. Gar Williams |
