Default Offset Gen Mount In A '36. Problems.

I've just tried to fit up my offset generator mount for the first time in my stock '36 engine bay and it doesn't fit.

The generator comes into contact with hood catch.

I tried shortening the generator bracket mounts which has allowed the generator to go into the bracket but now the generator is wedged tight between the bracket and hood catch, theres no adjustment what so ever!

If I remove the hood catch i've now got nothing holding the hood shut and that would only free up 1/2" of movement, if I'm lucky, before the generator would come through the hood!

I can't be the first/only person to fit an offset generator to a '36?!?

The offset mounts are set up to bolt up about as far over (left or right depending on brackets used) as you can go and still get the belts to work on most of the set ups I've seen. I was just looking at a 45 degree offset set up on Flathead Jacks site and it tucks in a little closer to the centerline of the block but requires hose adapter tubes or other modifications to work plus there may be fan mounting issues depending on what is used for a fan. This set up is also available in left or right.

I thought you were running an Eddie Meyer intake?
Doesn't it fit in the middle still?

Remember that right and left mounts are available (are we talking 59A style here??) and the they are not symmetrical. One holds generator perpendicular to the earth, that is vertical, and tucks it in closer than the other, which holds generator perpendicular to the cylinder head surface. The former would give more clearance at outer edge of engine.
The wider one is really for '39-41 cars with very low radiator hoses in the way of the other type.

Yeh, I did.

I've got a Edelbrock Super Dual now.

I think thats my problem.

I have the LH style mount which mounts it tight to the head. I think I need the RH one which mounts it higher and more upright.
I've got one on order. I'll need to get it on to see what clearance is like with the water tube.

I found this picture here which at the moment is the complete opposite of my generator setup but is the setup that I'm now copying.

By the way...when looking at different brands of speed equipment, the difference must be judged by the angles and not by the left/right designation. Lots of manifold makers made these, and the handedness varies...noticed this recently. I would believe in general that the tighter-in version is more desirable in any situation not requiring the other type, as it allows a bit more belt wrap on the pulley.

And see what happens when you get one of those late model cars?? Impossible to work on, like putting your flathead into a funnel!

I've just tried the other style generator mount and now its sits the generator to far the other way!
It now sits on top of the radiator inlet and where the water pipe needs to go.

This is the other low style mount on the other side. As you can see it just wedges the generator against the inner fender and bonnet catch.

Is there a third style mount that puts the generator somewhere in the middle of the two?
Someone most have experience of this, I'm not breaking new ground here!

I have never seen one that looks different...cannot speak to minor dimensional difs, though.
Consider milling/filing edges of the big slot in bracket to allow gen to be tilted a bit. Looks like there is enough room with very slight movement from either bracket.
Another route would be end plates with simple tabs, like '54-63 Ford and nearly every other car, cut down bracket to take the pivot bolt, moke a small L-bracket at stud near aft end of gen, and have infinite adjustment within the available arc.
Or toss the silly thing...the handcrank and a decent magneto will get you right out of this mess.
These late model cars are so damn complex...get a '32.

I have attached a pix of the side mount gen on my '36. The engine is a 59 AB with Offie Super manifold.
