Default Golden Brow Whitewalls

My Firestone whitewalls on my Sport Coupe turn a brown color. Does anyone have this situation? I have spoken with Coker and others and I get all different answers, (Ozone discoloration, black rubber bleeding through the white wall, etc.) What can I do to stop this? What can I do to remove the brown? What is the cause? Switching to blackwalls is not an answer! Thanks for your answers.

That's "PATINA" and adds value to the car!

I've also heard the same reasons you gave. I guess I'd use Westley's whitewall cleaner and live with it until the tires are worn out, then buy blackwalls.

I had some whitewalls that were in my loft that used to be on my coupe. and they were dingy and brown and yellowish on the whitewall. Mounted them on my rims and hit them with Westley's bleechwhite and they look brand new again, pearly white :-)

My Dad's A had the same problem. After trying everything I used Harley Davidson white wall cleaner. It turned them snow white. Only need to use it maybe 3 times a year. You can only buy it at the dealer. Costs less than $15

I got some whitewall cleaner at my local parts store. Squirt in on, wash it off. I don't know what's in it, but the residue stained my concrete driveway. The white was white, though! I think TurtleWax made it.

Must have been some powerful stuff. You can't go wrong with Westley's. Just used it last week, clean whitewalls and no stain on the drive.

My "wide whites" also turned to "wide browns" shortly after I bought them. I have yet to hear of a vendor that will warrant this defect.

Years ago I even resorted to wet sanding them with SANDPAPER. Try Lysol Brand Anti-Bacterial Kitchen spray cleaner, it's the most amazing cleaner, ever, makes crappy black rubber trim on newer cars look like NEW! It also KILLS kitchen ANTS, in a NANO-SECOND! It'll even soften goo in your oven bottom, where yo' pie boiled over, if you let it soak for quite awhile. It was the ONLY thing that would clean the brown, varnish-like, brake pad crap, from my Buick mag wheels. It has some funny named ingredient that I never heard of. After Cindy buffed her old Volvo, it cleaned ALL the white wax crap from her flat BLACK trim parts & made the rubber bumpers & black tires look like NEW!!!
Sold in most grocery stores, the spray bottle is white, with purple on the spray trigger goody. Most spray cleaners are "JUST A JOKE", but NOT this one!!!----Bill Williamson

Diamond back classic tires gives a good explanation for discolored whitewalls in his catalog, but he does not carry tires for theA.

I had the same yellow problem with my roadster tires after they sat uncleaned for 19 years. Just as I had done with white walls when a teenager some 55 yrs ago, I used Brillo soap pads to clean them. Worked better than the commercial chemical cleaners tried before.

I too use "Purple Stuff" and Brillo or SOS pads on our fordor. The whitewalls don't get as white as the older whitewalls on my other two cars, bit they seem to get whiter using Purple Stuff than anything else I've tried. Good luck with your cleaning project - would like to know what results you have with which products.

I also have used the brillo pad first, followed by the Westley's. Used this in my Dad's Model A ( I have owned it since 1986). The above combination seems to do a fairly decent job.

I've had good luck with a product called tire and wheel cleaner from A to Z,it cleans white walls and black walls nicely also,I notice after using things like no touch and armorall tires will turn cruddy brown, soap and water doesn't clean that off but this A to Z does. I use a stiff brush with it.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser did a great job on my white walls. Of course, they weren't brown when I started, just a bit dingy. They came out nice and white, though.

Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner works great it has bleach in it. This seems to a problem with the Repop Whitewalls. I've had it happen on three cars with whitewalls from a leading seller. But they do clean up. Environmental changes you know!!!
