Default Antifreeze Mess Cleanup

It looks like my water pump started leaking on the way home from the MARC National Meet in Morgantown, PA, and I have a mess under the hood. What is the best/easiest way to clean that up?

it was vinegar and a leaky water pump that messed up my paint work.

Disconnect the battery! 50 years ago I was cleaning under the hood and let the smoke out of the wiring!

Vinegar work goods, but makes a mess when draining, must be very careful when draining and flushing.
Hope you remembered to neutralize the vinegar with a box of dissolved baking soda, and then flushing again before your final fill

Was it one of those new fangled "Leak less" water pump?

No matter which type water pump, I always install a water pump cover, contains the mess somewhat. Easy to install. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/p...4031&cat=41793

Preventive measures are always best.

I really don’t know how to tell the difference between leak less and the standard water pump.

It looks like the packing nut is already tight. I don’t think I have an option to tighten it more.

That makes it tough. There appears to be more than one Leakless pump or kit available.

One of the reasons I have always stuck with the original type pump, you can adjust/repack it on the road.

But back to your original question, do what the others have suggested for cleanup. I like Simple Green.

I clean my engine bay every couple years. Warm the car up well, go to a self serve wand type car wash, lift the hood and spray it off. Try not to wet the distributor too much. If the engine is nice and warm the moisture will dry out quickly. Never had a problem so far, done it several times. Be careful, don't spray too closely or too long on any specific areas.

I agree. Prior to the tip, I didn’t see any real use for the cover. I’d like to try one.

I use "Simple Green" to clean around the engine and a scrub brush. Gets the oil off as well as any water pump leak deposits
