Merlot's Fall Tour
Our Fall in Southern Ontario is not as colourful as Ol' Henry's but it was a clear and sunny day. We travelled to Oil Springs in Lambton County to see again the oil fields that were the first in North America to produce Crude Oil commercially. We are parked near a well cleaning rig that is pulled by an older tractor. You can see that these are not like what we are used to seeing in the Texas or California oil Fields.
Moving into the next field, Just in front of Merlot is a Jerker rod powered oil well being pumped. Called a jerker because the well head is activated, by a series of rods connected to a remote power source. Electric now they were formerly powered by a steam engine. We are parked in front of an old scene of an oil well being drilled. The figures and horses are all crafted by a local blacksmith out of sheet steel. We move down the gravel road and the trees do not show much colour, but are getting sparse. Here we are seeing the barn on the Fairbank Oil Company property. The wells have been in continuous operation since 1861.
