Default Windshield teardown

Well, winter is here and its time to start a few restoration projects. First I'm going to attack the windshield. I did manage to get it off my 1929 coupe but I'm having a very hard time getting the old glass out. I cant even get the frame apart, as the horizontal screws at the top (2 per side) are froze in place and any amount of trying to unscrew them will likely cause them to strip. Any suggestions other than drilling them out ? When I do get them out, what is the procedure from there ? I believe a local glass shop can cut me a new one but I will have to make a template, therefore I need to keep the glass in tacked, correct ?

I have recently had the windshield glass removed and replaced. At the insistence of two friends, I took it to a shop AFTER removing the screws you talk about (I was LUCKY they came out without much trouble). I then tried to remove the glass to no avail. The shop removed then installed two pieces of which both cracked, but on the third try there was success. I paid the agreed price which I remember was in the $125 range for the glass and installation. I don't think there was any money made by them on my job!

Just a suggestion, have someone do the job AFTER removing those D*** screws!

As with most rusted screws & bolts I used heat to remove those screws on my windshield. I heated the screws to a dull red and then let them cool. I also soaked them with some PB Blaster after cooling and while trying to turn them. Once it broke loose I made sure there was plenty of penetrant and turned the screws back and forth a little a time to back them out. On a couple of the screws I had to repeat the heating process a couple of times.
The bracket was also rusted in the windshield frame, I used a block of wood against the frame and tapped it in and out until it gave way.
My glass guy isn't interested in any measurements for glass, he wants to fit the glass to what ever I take to him. You should call your glass guy and see how he would like to do it.

If you have a machine shop around, they have machines that electrically destroy only the part needing removal, if all else fails.

Not 2 screws per end, be sure to remove all 3 screws per end.
